= 3 logx 2 + 3 – 3/2 logx 3
= 3a + 3 – 3/2 b
= 3(a + 1 – ½b)

7. Given that e6x – 7 = yx and that ln y + 7 = 6x, calculate the values of x and y.

e6x – 7 = yx
ln e6x – 7 = ln yx

ln y + 7 = 6x
ln y = 6x – 7 ------ (2)

x ln y – ln y = 0
ln y (x – 1) = 0
ln y = 0 or x = 1
y = e0 = 1
When y = 1, ln 1 + 7 = 6x
x = 7/6
When x = 1, ln y = 6 – 7 = -1

Ans: x = 1, y = 0.368 or x = 7/6, y = 1

8. Given that log8 (p + 2) + log8 q = r – ⅓ and that log2 (p – 2) – log2 q = 2r + 1, show that p2
= 4 + 32r. If r = 1, find the values of p and q.

log8 (p + 2) + log8 q = r – 1/3
log8 q(p + 2) = r – 1/3
q(p + 2) = 8r – 1/3
q(p + 2) = (23)r – 1/3
