Introduction to Revit
o What is BIM
o Building information modeling
o A design and documentation system that supports the design, drawings,
and schedule required for building project
o Delivers information about project design, scope, quantities, and phases
when you need it.
1. Model Element
– Represent the actual 3D geometry of the building.
– For example: walls, windows, doors, roofs
2. Datum Element
– Help define the project context.
– For example: grids, levels, reference planes
3. New Specific Elements
– Display only in views in which they are placed,
– Help describe or documents the model.
– For example: Dimension, tags, 2D detail components

elements
1. TYPE PROPERTIES
– Change in affect all current future instance of the family type.
2. INSTANCE PROPERTIES
– Change in value affect only the elements in your selection or
the element that you are about to place.
Category
– Zoom in Region ZR
– Zoom Out (2X) ZO
– Zoom to Fit ZF
– Zoom All to Fit ZA
– Zoom Sheet Size ZS
STEERING WHEEL (F8)
– Tracking menus that are divided into different sections known as wedges. Each wedge on a wheel represents a
single navigation tool.
– Can pan, zoom or manipulate the current view of a model in different ways.
View Cube
– A persistent, clickable and draggable interface that you use to switch between standard
and isometric view of your model.
Note: Appears only in 3D
Lines
Fillet
Chain line segments when sketching so the last
point on the previous line becomes on the next Spline
line.
Ellipse
Rectangle
Inscribed Polygon Partial Ellipse
Vertices are the specified distance from the center Pick Lines
Circumscribed polygon Offset
Polygon sides are specified distance from the Radius

Circle
Arc ( Start, End, Radius)
SNAPS
Object Snap Shortcut Key Description
Endpoints SE Snaps to the endpoint of an element or component
Midpoints SM Snaps to the midpoint of an element or component.
When placing a wall insert, such as a window, door
or opening you can use midpoint override. SM snaps
he insert to the midpoint of the wall segment
Nearest SN Snaps to the nearest element or component. Id you
turn off the Nearest object snap by clearing the
check box or using the keyboard override.
Work Plane Grid SW Snaps to a work plane grid
Quadrants SO Snaps to quadrant points. For arcs, jump snaps are
enabled
Intersections SI Snaps to intersections
Centers SC Snaps to the center of an arc
Perpendicular SP Snaps to perpendicular elements or components
SNAPS
Object Snap Shortcut Key Description
Tangents ST Snaps tangents to an arc
Points SX Snaps to site points when editing points using Move
or Copy tool
Snap to Remote SR This is similar to jump snaps. When you select this
Object option look for objects that are not near the
element
Close SZ Snaps to close valid open loops. See closing an Open
loop
Turn Override Off SS Turn off snap overrides
Cycle through Tab Key Cycles through the available snap options

Reverse direction Shift + Tab Cycles through the available snap options in reverse
when cycling order.

Force Horizontal Shift Key Forces horizontal and vertical constraints
and Vertical
Snaps Off SO Disables all snap setting
Line Pattern
1. Move (MV)
– Constrains- restricts the movement of the element along
vectors that run perpendicular or collinear to the element
– Disjoin- break the association between the selection and the
other elements before moving.
Copying Elements
1. Copy (CO)
– Copies one or more selected elements and allows you to place
copies in the drawing immediately
– Different than the copy to clipboard tool
Option Bar:
1. Copy- to move the selected item ( rather than making a
copy of it)
Array (AR)
Options Bar:
1. Group Associate- includes each member of he array in a group
2. Number- Specifies the total number of copies (of the selected
elements) in the array
3. Constrain- Restricts movement of array member along vectors that
run perpendicular or collinear to the selected elements.
Scale
– Graphically
– Numerically
Option Bar:
1. Multiple alignment- to align multiple lements with a selected element
(as an alternative press CTRL while selecting multiple element to align)
Split (SL)
3 options:
1. Trim/ Extend to Corner
2. Trim/Extend Single Element
3. Trim/Extend Multiple Element
Offset (OF)
Option Bar:
1. Numerical- drag the selected element the desired distance.
2. Graphical- enter a value for the offset distance
Level (LL)
Constraints
Name A label for the level. You can assign any label or name you wish to
this property.
Design Option A read-only field that indicates the design option in which the
level lines display
Extents
Scope Box The scope box applied to the level. See Controlling visibility of
Datums Usings Scope Boxes
Level (LL)
Level type Properties
Name Description
Constraints
Elevation Base If set to project, elevation respect project origin. If shared, respect shared origin. To change
shred origin, relocate the project.
Graphics
Line weights Set the line weight for the level type
Symbol
Symbol at End 1 Default Determines whether the head of the level line displays a level number in bubble, a level
number but no bubble or no level number
Symbol at End 2 Default Places a bubble by default at the right end of the level line.
Dimensions
Automatic room Computation height for the perimeter of the room is measured at a defined distance above
Computation Height the base level of the room. To use default ( 4’ or 1200 mm above the base level of the room
Computation Height Enter the distance above the base level to use when computing the room area and perimeter.
If the room includes a sloped wall consider using a computation height of 0
Grid (GR)
– Finite lines.
– Grid tool is Used to place columns grid lines on the building
design
– Can be straight or arcs.

Types of Column
1. Architectural Column
– Use to model column box-outs around structural columns and for
decorative applications
2. Structural Column
– Used to model vertical load-bearing elements in a building.

Change material and finishes

Structural Beams
used for load-bearing applications.
Are level hosted attached to a column or wall.

Walls (WA)
Layer Function
– Structure [1]- layer that supports the remainder of the
wall, floor or roof
– Substrate [2]- Material, such as a plywood or gypsum
board, which acts as a foundation for another material
– Thermal/Air Layer [3]-Provides insulation and prevents air
penetration
– Membrane Layer-A membrane that commonly prevents
water vapor penetration. The membrane layer should have
zero thickness
Wall
Layer Function
– Finish 1 [4]- finish is typically the exterior layer
– Finish 2[5]- Finish is typically the interior layer
FLIP WALL
Detail Level
• Course- details/ patterns are not visible on drawing
• Medium- detail/ Pattern are half visible on drawing
• Fine- detail/pattern are fully visible on the drawing.

Types of Window
1. Metric window- ordinary window
2. Metric window- Curtain wall-glass Window with mullions
3. Metric window with Trim- Window with caing/molding
