Revit Architecture Reviewer 01.24.18

This document provides an introduction and overview of the Revit architecture software. It discusses key concepts such as what BIM is, the parametric nature of the Revit model where all information is linked, and definitions of important terms like project, level, element, category, family, and type. It also describes the Revit interface including the ribbon, panels, tabs, properties palette, status bar and other interface elements. Finally, it provides instructions on getting started with Revit such as creating a new project, displaying commands, and using the steering wheel.

Introduction to Revit

o What is BIM
o Building information modeling
o A design and documentation system that supports the design, drawings,
and schedule required for building project
o Delivers information about project design, scope, quantities, and phases
when you need it.

In Revit Model, every drawing sheet, 2D and 3D view, and schedule

is a presentation of information from the same underlying building
model database.

In short, all info in one drawing.

Parametric

– Refers to the relationships

among the elements of the
model that enable the
coordination and change
CATEGORY COLUMNS management that Revit
Architecture provides

Definition of terms
for Revit
Project

– Single database of information for your design.

– Contains all information for the building design, from
geometry to construction data.
Level

– Infinite horizontal planes that acts as a reference for level

hosted elements, such as roofs, floors and ceilings.
Element

– When creating a project, you add Revit parametric building

elements to the design.
– Classified as categories, families and types
Three types of Elements

1. Model Element
– Represent the actual 3D geometry of the building.
– For example: walls, windows, doors, roofs
2. Datum Element
– Help define the project context.
– For example: grids, levels, reference planes
3. New Specific Elements
– Display only in views in which they are placed,
– Help describe or documents the model.
– For example: Dimension, tags, 2D detail components

2D items that provide details about the building model in a particular view.
Elements and its properties
two types of elements that control their appearance and behavior.

1. TYPE PROPERTIES
– Change in affect all current future instance of the family type.
2. INSTANCE PROPERTIES
– Change in value affect only the elements in your selection or
the element that you are about to place.
Category

– Group of elements that you use to model or document a

building design.

– Ex: categories of model elements Includes walls and beams

– Ex: Categories of annotation elements include tags and text
notes.

Family

– Classes of elements in a category

– THREE kinds of families:
1. Loadable Family
– Can be loaded into a project and created on family templates (doors,
windows, fixtures, etc.)
2. System Family
– Walls, dimensions, ceilings, floors and levels.
– Not available for loading or creating as separate files
3. In-Place Family
– Custom elements that were created in the context of the project.
– When needed a unique geometry.

opened most recently.

Modify Tools

1. Move (MV)
– Constrains- restricts the movement of the element along
vectors that run perpendicular or collinear to the element
– Disjoin- break the association between the selection and the
other elements before moving.
Copying Elements

1. Copy (CO)
– Copies one or more selected elements and allows you to place
copies in the drawing immediately
– Different than the copy to clipboard tool

– Copy tool Place immediately

– Copy to clipboard, switch view first before placing the copies.

– Multiple- create multiple copies of an element every time you click

in the drawing area.
Rotate (RO)

Rotate elements around an axis.

Note: not all elements can rotate around an axis ( for example, walls do
not rotate in elevation views)
Options Bar:
1. Disjoin- break the connection between the selection and other
elements before rotating ( useful, when you want to rotate one wall
that is joined to another wall)
2. Copy- rotate a copy selection. The original remain in place
3. Angle- specify the angle of rotation and press ENTER.
4. Center of Rotation- when you click the PLACE option, you are going
to specify the location of the picot point.
Mirror (MM/DM)

Reverse the position of a selected model element, using a line

as the mirror axis.

Option Bar:
1. Copy- to move the selected item ( rather than making a
copy of it)
Array (AR)

– Creates a linear or radial array f the selected elements.

– The elements of an array can follow a line ) a linear array), or they can
follow an arc ( a radial array)

Options Bar:
1. Group Associate- includes each member of he array in a group
2. Number- Specifies the total number of copies (of the selected
elements) in the array
3. Constrain- Restricts movement of array member along vectors that
run perpendicular or collinear to the selected elements.
Scale
– Graphically
– Numerically

Modify panel>> pins
Align (AL)

– To align one or more elements with a selected element.

– Generally used to align walls, beams and lines

Option Bar:
1. Multiple alignment- to align multiple lements with a selected element
(as an alternative press CTRL while selecting multiple element to align)
Split (SL)

– To divide elements into 2 separate parts, remove segment

between 2 points, or to create a defined gap between walls.
– Two ways to split ( Split element, Split with Gap)
Note: Joint Gap is limited to values 1.6mm and 304.8mm(Metric) or 1/16” and 1’ (Imperial)

You can split the following elements:

– Walls
– Lines
– Beams
– Braces
Trim (TR)

– Use to trim and extend on or more elements to a boundary

by the same element type.

3 options:
1. Trim/ Extend to Corner
2. Trim/Extend Single Element
3. Trim/Extend Multiple Element
Offset (OF)

– Use to copy or move a selected model line, detail line, wall,

or beam a specified distance perpendicular to its length.

Option Bar:
1. Numerical- drag the selected element the desired distance.
2. Graphical- enter a value for the offset distance
Level (LL)

– Infinite horizontal planes that acts as a reference for level

hosted elements, such as roofs, floors and ceilings.

– Define a vertical height or story within a building.
