Factors affecting Performance - Receiving
 Coordinating packing to the warehouse’s need
 Size / Type of packing – Cartons, Cases, Cube dimensions

 Coordinating the means of delivery with the warehouse’s abilities


 Pallets – for forklifts
 Chains / locking mechanism – for cranes

 Ensuring delivery is efficient and safe

 Labelling goods in an easy-to-read way


 Human readable
 Barcode scanners

 Reviewing Orders / Pre-shipment notification


Factors affecting Performance – Storage Locations
 Clearly marked storage locations

 Using the right equipment for the job

 Storing as per FIFO (First in – First Out) or FEFO ( First expiry – First Out)

 Storage Plan based on:


 Product velocity
 Weight / Volume
 Special storage needs

 Real time updates in the warehouse management systems


Picking Process
Two types of systems
 Picker to part system (picker moves to the pick location)
 Part to picker system (pick location is brought to picker)

Order Increments – SKU (Each) / Case / Pallet

Routing Strategy
 Picking Route pattern – defined through Pick lists or Pick Report

 Picking Structure
 Discrete order picking – Order specific only
 Batch Picking – Multiple orders picked in one go
 Zone Picking – Multiple pickers in multiple areas at the same time performing
Discrete or Batch picking
Factors affecting Performance - Picking

 Use a picking route that minimizes travel time and backtracking

 Point of pick-up – system updates

 SKUs clearly labelled in human readable format

 Aisles clear of clutter that can slow transit or create hazards

 Eliminate paper work for picker


Factors affecting Performance - Dispatch

 Managing third party shippers

 Coordinating traffic at loading bays

 Loading efficiently and safely

 Completing all required documentation

 Real time system updates
