CHAPTER 1
The Problem and Its Background
Introduction
During the difficult economic times, vacationers are

more discriminating when choosing a resort destination.

Amenities often will define a resort when you make a vacation

decision, tourism experts will cite resort offerings and

amenities as one of the keys deciding factors Amenities are

any extra product or service found in the hotel. Although

amenities can include hotel items such as shampoo, a coffee

machine, and WI-FI, this study will focus exclusively on

resort recreation amenities. A resort is a full-service

lodging facility that provides access to or offers a range of

amenities and recreation facilities to emphasize a leisure

experience. Resorts work for as a primary provider of the

guests’ experience, often provide service for business or

meetings, and are characteristically located in vacation-

oriented settings.

And the resort recreation offerings grown over the

years. Early resorts could focus on one amenity and be

prosperous. Ski resorts didn’t seem to need more than an

alpine ski area beach resorts could rely on the beach alone

for visitors. But as the resort industry grew, multiple

amenity offerings became the norm and consumers became

conditioned to expect certain amenities as part of the resort

experience.

Amenities & facilities can make or break the success

of a recreation amenities & facilities department and is a

way for resorts to stay competitive in the market according

to a 2010 research study 40% of hospitality managers

indicated they were ready to make recreation area structural

improvements, with twenty percent (20%) also specifying spa

improvements because today’s travelers expect much from their

recreation. And a resort is full-service lodging facility

that provides access to or offers a range of amenities and

recreation facilities to emphasize a leisure experience.

Resorts work for as a primary provider of the guest’s

experience, often provide services for business or meetings,

and are characteristically located in vacation-oriented

settings. And the recreation participation changes,

vacationers demands, and industry influence have swayed

resort development over the years, so much so, that for each

decade, a new seemingly “essential” recreation amenity

appeared to emerge. A swimming pool was one of the earliest

expected resort facilities, followed by tennis in the 70s,

fitness in the 80s, golf in the 90s and spa in the 2000s and

this study will be conducted in order to assess the

facilities and amenities of selected beach resorts in

COLLEGE OF HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT

This study aims to assess the facilities and amenities

offered by selected beach resorts in Batangas City.

Specifically, it seeks to answer the following sub-

problems:

1. How do Local and Community visitors assess the

selected beach resorts in Batangas City in terms of:

1.1 Facilities; and

1.2 Amenities?

2. Is there a significant difference in the assessment of

the two groups of respondents using the above-mentioned

variables

3.What are the problems encountered by the respondents

related to facilities and amenities?

Hypothesis

This study hypothesizes that there is no significant

difference in the assessment of two groups of respondents on

the facilities and amenities offered by selected beach

resorts in Batangas city.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

CHM faculty. They can be used this as a teaching guide

for student to understand the importance of facilities and

amenities of the beach resort.

Definition of Terms.

The following terms are defined operationally and

lexically to provide a common frame of reference:

Facilities is a place, amenity, or piece of equipment

provided for a particular purpose. (Collins, 2008)

Amenities a hotel amenities include health clubs and

conference facilities. The hotel has a very good amenities.

(Collins, 2008)

Beach Resort is a full Service holiday lodging facility,

located at the seaside, with access to a private beach. The

beach being the primary focus for tourists. (Rowling, 2006)

Review of Related Literature and Studies

Local Literature

According to Natividad (2011) amenities and facilities

include accommodation, food and local transport,

communication and entertainment. No matter how attractive a

destination is, its potential for tourist will be limited

unless the basic amenities which tourism requires are well

provided and offers amenities according to customers

EULOGIO “AMANG” RODRIGUEZ
INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY
COLLEGE OF HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT

expectation. It is considered as an industry which main aim

is also to make profits for the hotelier, though this may

change at times. The most important thing with any guest

service expectation is to remember that “if a guest has a

good expectation they will tell a few friends, if a guest has

a bad experience they will tell everyone”.

Cruz (2010) emphasized that every time customer avails

or use facilities while staying or having business, basic

amenities which tourism requires should be provided based on

what sector of hospitality business it is. Attractive

destination will become potential for tourism business if it

is promoted well and there is somebody to take charge in

making the public know the areas. There are important guest

requirements that must always be delivered to ensure guest

expectation and also satisfy or delight them. These

requirements are: housekeeping are appliances and furnishing

are in good working conditions and complete amenities.

Carino and Yap (2013) discussed that in every guestroom.

Guest are provided amenities to make their stay more

comfortable and enjoyable. Guest amenities are luxury items

EULOGIO “AMANG” RODRIGUEZ
INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY
COLLEGE OF HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT

that a hotel gives away to its guest at no extra charge,

although the cost of these items is often hidden in the room

rate. Public area: Bathroom Paper Products and Liquid Hand

Soap, Guest room. Compendium, Linen and Towels, Guest

Bathroom Supplies, Bathroom Paper Products, Kitchen and

Dinner Wares and others. Amenities are courtesies provided to

guests and are now found in almost every hotel level. These

amenities may be classified as guest essentials. Guest

expendables and guest loans items. With the advent of such

high price tags on rooms, hoteliers have found it necessary

to provide a vast array of personal care products to make the

guest feel pampered and as if they are getting the full value

for the high room rates.

The guest rooms in the hotel vary in size,

classification and amenities these are the common guest room

type in the hotel: Single rooms: A room designed for a single

traveler; Double rooms: A room with two double beds; Twin

Rooms a room with a two single beds; Suite rooms: a complete

rooms usually with foyer that connects to one or more

bedrooms. Usually this is the most expensive room in the

hotel. Nowadays the hotel industry is slowly deciding whether

to put up a laundry department, which includes size of

equipment, space needed, staffing consideration, and

environmental impact/ Everything boils down if the decision

of maintaining an premise laundry far out weights the out

sourcing requirements of hotel. These are two primary clients

of the laundry department, there are the hotel itself and the

guests. Moral (2014)

According to Lim (2014) have guest room a cruise ship

has a state room/cabin, Ship staterooms are usually extremely

compact but all spaces are well utilized to answer all the

guests need. Private space, is a reserve for the ship’s

personnel. This includes the new crew’s cabins, cafeteria,

gym and recreational facilities, the bridge where the vessel

is controlled, the gallery or kitchen, and machine areas.

Public Spaces, these are areas dedicated to passenger’s

usage. The public areas in cruise ships are similar with

those of land-based hotels. The following are the areas that

comprise the public area section of the cruise ships:

Showroom, which serves as the ship’s venue for entertainment

and business functions, such as conventions, conferences, and

meetings, and Dining room, which is where the guest’s meals

are served. Similar to the food and beverage outlets typical

in land-based hotels, the size of the dining area usually

depends on the carrying capacity of the vessel.

Paulino, (2012) revealed that ‘It is a reflection of

who they are because they never stop providing our clients

with best that they can give. They want our clients to see

that they never stop delivering the best service; they never

stop improving our facilities and will never stop giving

their customers, patrons and guests exciting surprises. They

have done improvements in the ters of amenities and

facilities to provide a more relaxing and entertaining venue

for customers

Foreign Literature

Hossain (2010) mentioned that a rural areas lack proper

facilities, people tend to migrate to urban areas in hope of

better standard of life. This causes various problems in

urban areas. These problems can only be reduced if sufficient

facilities are provided in the rural areas. Educated buyers

have come to expect lavish amenities and fine finishes and

are willing to pay for them.

Resorts are typically located in pictures settings and

have 200 to 500 guest rooms. An Example of well-known resort

in the United State the Breakers, West Palm Beach, FI, resort

provided comprehensive array of recreational amenities

depending on the graphic location. Variety of food and

beverage outlets is available, Ranging from informal to fine-

dining restaurants. With any resorts located in remote

locations, it is often not feasible for guest to have

property for dining options. Hrung (2011)

According to Elsevier (2009), the endogenous dynamics

of the social structure of a city where the spatial

repartition of amenities is endogenously modified by the

spatial repartition of social groups. We start from the well

known fact that, in most European cities, central locations

are occupied by rich households; while in American cities,

they are occupied by poor households. In a standard urban

model without amenities, for rich house holds to locate

downtown, t heir unit transport cost must be very high

EULOGIO “AMANG” RODRIGUEZ
INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY
COLLEGE OF HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT

compared to the poor. Bruckner and alii (1999) show that,

when there are hotel amenities mainly located in the city

center, we no longer need a high differential between

transport costs: if demand for amenities by the rich is

strong enough, this advantage could attract the rich

households in the city center immigrant amenities contribute

to the public life of the street by supporting its diversity

and vitality, which is crucial for the socio-cultural

inclusion of immigrants into mainstream society. However

immigrant amenities change within urban transformation

processes, many times in the context of urban renewal, Theses

changes influence their contribution to the public life to

the street. This study focuses on the changes of Turkish

amenities in Amsterdam at street and city levels. It

concludes that the decline of immigrant amenities contradicts

policy aimed at supporting the socio-cultural.

According to Agenor (2011), the present study focused

on infrastructural facilities and basic amenities to estimate

the spatial distribution of backwards areas in the

murshidabad district of West Bengal, India. An adequate

supply of infrastructure has long been essential for economic

development for both academicians and policy makers. Improved

infrastructure has an aggregate impact on income and economic

development.

According to Ackerman & de Klerk (2012) From this point

of view, the present study aimed to appraise the

infrastructural facilities and basic amenities to analyze the

spatial extension of backwardness. For the same, 17 decision

criteria under four parameters including physical

infrastructure, medical and health service, educational

amenities and recreational facilities were selected and

geospatial technique i.e.

% = f/N x 100
Where:

% = percentage

F = frequency

N = total no. of respondents

2. Weighted Mean This was used to determine the average

score of the response by the respondent’s appraisal based on

the options in the items given in the questionnaire. This was

used to treat the gathered data for the assessment of the

gathered information.

Mean or arithmetic average is defined as the values in the

data group divided by number of the values, the formula used

is:
