CEFR Listening

This lesson plan is for a 60-minute English class for Year 4 students. The theme is Science and Technology and the topic is "Let's Chat". Students will practice their listening skills by listening to a phone conversation about using a computer and answering true/false and comprehension questions. CONTENT STANDARD : Listening 1.1 Understand meaning in a variety of
familiar contexts.
Speaking 2.1 Communicate information, ideas,
opinions and feelings intelligibly on familiar topics.
LEARNING STANDARD : Listening 1.1.1 Understand independently the main
ideas in extended texts on a wide range of familiar
topics.
Speaking 2.1.1 Explain simple content on familiar
topics from what they read and hear.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES : By the end of the lesson, pupils will be able to:
1. listen to and understand independently the main
ideas from a phone conversation on how to use a
computer by answering True/False questions from
the textbook.
2. explain a problem faced and how it is solved in the
end by answering 2 comprehension questions.
CROSS CURRICULAR : Information and Communication Technology
ELEMENTS
ACTIVITIES : PRE-LESSON (10 : 1. Pupils are asked to name the devices hold by the

2. In groups of four, pupils are given a sticky note
each to write the applications they always use by
using the gadgets within 1 minute.
3. The pupils will paste their sticky note on the
whiteboard. The group with the most applications on
their list is the winning group.
4. As their reward, they read aloud their list proudly.

3. Pupils discuss the answers in their group (Peer
assessment) before being clarified by the teacher.
4. Pupils go through the statements in activity C.
5. Pupils discuss the meaning of each statement with
their partner (peer support). Then, they share their
understanding with the other pair in their group.
6. Pupils listen to the CD (CD is played twice) and
complete the exercise (Differentiation by outcome
[strategy 4] : better able pupils answer all 8
questions; less able pupils are allowed to answer
5/8 questions)
7. Pupils share their answers by showing ‘thumbs up’
signal for correct answers, ‘thumbs down’ signal for
incorrect answers and ‘thumbs sideways’ signal for
unsure answers (FA: quick scan).

(Note: Supplementary activity)


1. Pupils are given a short incomplete e-mail from a
mother to her daughter about shopping a gift online.
2. Pupils are to complete the short e-mail.
(Differentiation by the type and amount of support
[strategy 3] : less able pupils are given a list of
words).
3. Teacher calls out a few pupils to share their
answers (FA: lollypop sticks)

POST LESSON (10 minutes) : Pupils are asked whether they have any experience
sending e-mails before.
