H. 1. Let x be the number, then 8 + 3x = 32 ⇒ x = 8
2. Let x be the number, then 7 + 4x = 23 + 2x ⇒ x = 8
3. Let x feet be the length of the shorter piece, then 20 –x feet is the length of the longer piece. And so, 2x = 4 + (20
– x) ⇒x = 8 ft
4. Let x be the first even integer, then x + 2 is the next even integer. And so, 5x = 4 (x + 2) ⟹ x = 8. Thus, the two
integers are 8 and 10.
5. Let x be the present age of Ben, and then 3 + 2x is the present age of Ana. Ten years from now, their ages are x +
10 and 13 + 2x, respectively. And so, we have 3x + 23 = 47 ⟹ x = 8. Thus, the age of Ben is 8 years older while
Ana is 19 years old. The age of Ana five years ago is 14 years old.

Challenge!!
1. Let x be the length of the rectangle, then x – 8 is the width of the rectangle. From the problem, we can form the
relation 364 = 2(x + x -8) ⇒ 182 = 2x – 8 ⇒ 2x = 190 ⇒ x = 95. Thus, the length is 95 meters and the width is 95
– 8 = 87 meters. Hence, the area is (95) (87) = 8 265 m².

2. 4𝑥−3 ≤ 3 ⇒ 3 ≤ 3(4x – 3) ⇒ 1 ≤ 4x – 3 ⇒ 4 ≤ 4x ⇒ x ≥ 1
3. In |2x + 7| ≥ |3x – 5|, let |3x – 5| = d ≥ 0. And so, 2x + 7 ≥ d or 2x + 7 ≤ - d ⇒ 2x + 7 ≥ 3x – 5 or 2x + 7 ≤ 5 –
−2 −2
3x ⇒ x ≥ 5 or ≤ 12 ⇒ 5 ≤ x ≤ 12.

2018 𝑥 2019 2019 𝑥 2020 2020 2018 2019 2019 2020 2020 2018
−3 11 9 33 42 −213
5. Simplify (a + b)² - b (2a + b – 3) = a² + 2ab + b² - 2ab - b² + 3b = a² + 3b = ( 4 )² + 3 (16) = 16 + 16 = 16 or 8
6. 7x – 28 ≥ 15x – 252 ⟹ 224 ≥ 8x ⟹ x ≤ 28. Thus, x = 28.
7. Since absolute value yields o positive answer, the only way for the sum to be zero is for the two addends to be
both equal to zero. Thus, x + y – 3 = 0 and 2x – y = 0. Solving by simultaneous equations, we have x = 1 and
y = 2.
