Apprentice technician trainin program
This program provides heavy equipment technicians (to be) with the fundamental knowledge of components
and systems used in heavy equipment. It provides the opportunity for individuals to take the first step in
becoming a professional technician. The main purpose is to enable participants to gain basic knowledge and
skills, required for safe and correct maintenance practices.
4 months
This course will introduce the technician to basics of the advanced features and systems of the mining
machines. The component location, function, calibration, testing and adjusting of the machine systems will be
covered. The machine monitoring system will be covered and explained. This course concentrates on how these
systems operate by utilizing classroom instruction and hands on lab activities
40 hours (5 days)
Engine fundamentals
This course introduces the student to Caterpillar basic diesel engine theory and principles. The principles of
compression ignited internal combustion engines are taught and variations in design are discussed.
40 hours (5 days)
Hydraulic fundamentals
This class is designed to help students understand hydraulic principles and how they are used in the operation of
hydraulic system components. Participants learn to identify the function of the various valves used in hydraulic
systems and to identify the function of vane pumps, gear pumps, and piston pumps.
40 uur (8 dagen)
Electrical fundamentals
Participants learn basic principles, Ohm’s Law, voltage resistance, amperage, electrical/hydraulic comparison,
terms, AC, DC, PWM, analog, input/control/output, wire maintenance, connectors tooling, electrical
schematics, and troubleshooting.
40 hours (5 days)
Powertrain fundamentals
This course introduces the student to Caterpillar powertrain theory and system principles.
40 hours (5 days)
Undercarriage fundamentals
Discussed are undercarriage components, operation, maintenance, and repair options of track type machines.
40 hours (5 days)
This workshop is a foundational level, instructor- led laboratory course to instruct Preventative Maintenance
Technicians on conducting and documenting PM4 Maintenance Interval Schedules (MIS) and TA1 Technical
Analysis Walk-Around Inspections.
16 hours (2 days)
This course covers the necessary topics on fuels and lubricants used in Earthmoving and Heavy Road Transport
Equipment.
16 hours (2 days)
8 hours (1 day)
SIS is a computer-based program that is compatible with Windows 7 and above. It is used to access parts
books, disassembly and assembly, testing and adjusting, system operation, and specification information.
16 hours (2 days)
This course provides instruction on the use of Electronic Technician software and the required communication
adapter. Students will receive training on ET as a service tool and be able to demonstrate the features of ET
software.
24 hours (3 days)
Anyone interested in becoming a certified hydraulic hose and coupling assembler will benefit from this class.
The course covers hose identification, coupling identification, hose assembly identification, hydraulic hose
assembly, tooling, contamination control and use of reference materials.
8 hours (1 day)
Troubleshooting techniques
This course is designed to develop skills in the area of basic trouble shooting techniques. The class is designed
to train the participants to accurately and logically use a troubleshooting process to achieve answers to
problems. It teaches a logical step-by-step process that can be used in any troubleshooting situation.
40 hours (5 days)
AFA I focuses on the basic principles of metallurgy, wear and fractures, and on managing the failure analysis
process itself to arrive at the most probable root cause of failure. After instruction in these basics, students then
learn to apply the fundamentals to the major engine components: Bearings, Crankshafts, Valves, Pistons, Rings,
Liners, Connecting Rods, and Threaded Fasteners.
40 hours (5 days)
This course begins with a review of the basic principles covered in AFA I. Students apply those principles to
gears, anti-friction bearings, hydraulic pumps & motors, lubrication, welds, and shafts.
