Tutorial Sheet 2213

This document contains 14 questions regarding fluid mechanics concepts like streamlines, velocity potential, vorticity, dynamic similarity, modeling, and dimensional analysis. The questions cover topics such as determining analytical expressions for streamlines and velocity from given velocity potentials, calculating vorticity from a velocity field, satisfying conditions of dynamic similarity between pipes, using Buckingham Pi theorem to derive relationships between flow parameters, and using Rayleigh's method to obtain correlations between variables that influence the time period of a simple pendulum.

FLUID MECHANICS- MEC 207

TUTORIALSHEET 2

Q.1 Consider the following steady, incompressible, two-dimensional velocity field:

Generate an analytical expression for the flow streamlines.

Q.2 If for a two-dimensional potential flow, the velocity potential is given by:

Φ = 4x (3y - 4)

Determine the velocity at the point (2, 3). Determine also the value of stream function Ψ at the
point (2, 3).

Q.3 The velocity vector in a flow field is given by:

=2x3 -5x2 y . Find the angular velocity.

Q.4 The velocity potential function for a flow field is given by:

φ=x2-y2. What will be the equation of the equipotential line passing through the point (1,1)?

Q.5 The velocity components in a two dimensional flow field for an incompressible fluid are
as follows:

u = y3/3 + 2x – x2y

v = xy2 – 2y – x3/3

Show that it is a possible case of fluid flow. Obtain an expression for the stream function Ψ.

Q.6 If for a two-dimensional potential flow, the velocity potential is given by

Φ = x (2y - 1)

Determine the velocity at the point P (4, 5). Determine also the value of stream function Ψ at
the point P.
Q.7 If for a flow stream function is given by, Ψ=3xy. Find the respective velocity potential
function.

Q.8 Consider the following steady, three-dimensional velocity field:

Calculate the vorticity vector as a function of space (x, y, z).

Q.9 The velocity potential function in a two-dimensional flow field is given by

Φ= x2-y2 then find the magnitude of velocity at point (1,1)

Q.10 Water is flowing through a pipe of diameter 30 cm at a velocity of 4m/s. Find the
velocity of oil flowing in another pipe of diameter 10 cm, if the condition of dynamic similarity
is satisfied between the two pipes. The viscosity of water and oil is given as 0.01 poise and
0.025 poise. The specific gravity of oil = 0.8

Q.11 A model of scale 1/5 is to be designed. The prototype is to develop 8 MW and run at 600
rpm. The head available is 40 m. If the dynamometer facility is limited to 25 kW, determine the
head required and the speed of the model

Q.12 The pressure drop Δp is expected to depend upon the gate opening h, the overall depth d,
the velocity V, density ρ and viscosity derive the relation using Buckingham’s Pi Method

Q.13 Deduce the following expression with the help of Buckingham’s Pi Method

where g denotes function f and all other

parameters have their usual meaning

Q.14 Time period of simple pendulum depends on length and gravity. Obtain the correlation

using Rayleigh’s method
