This 6 unit course covers solar energy conversion technology and processes. The objectives are to establish relationships between thermodynamics, heat transfer and physics for solar energy systems and to understand solar radiation, thermal, PV, storage and applications. The course outline includes units on introduction, solar radiation, solar thermal conversion, concentrated solar power, solar photovoltaics and solar photocatalysis. Evaluation includes unit tests, mid and end semester exams, and assignments. Lectures will be presented using blackboard and powerpoint on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 12:00-12:55 pm.

importance of thermodynamics required for
designing efficient systems will also be
covered.
• Numerical examples will be discussed to
understand the physical significance of
various aspects of solar energy conversion.
Objectives
• Enable the learners to establish relationship
between thermodynamics, heat transfer and
physics for functioning of Solar Energy
Conversion systems and its development.
• Enable the learners to understand the solar
radiation, geometry, solar thermal, PV,
storage, and it’s applications to meet
demands in household and commercial level.
• Enable the learners to apply the knowledge
for development of efficient and sustainable
systems.

 Overview of Global and Indian energy scenario
 Sources of Energy and its classifications
Unit 1: Introduction  Renewable energy sources, classification and systems
 Overview of 1st , 2nd and 3rd law of thermodynamics
 Thermodynamic processes and basic cycles
 Extra-terrestrial and terrestrial radiation, Radiation measurements;
 Earth-Sun relation: Solar angles, day length, angle of incidence on
tilted surface; Sun path diagrams; Shadow determination;
Unit 2: Solar Radiation Extraterrestrial characteristics; Effect of earth atmosphere;
Measurement and estimation on horizontal and tilted surfaces; Indian
solar radiation data.
• Fundamentals, Flat plate collectors-liquid and air type, Theory of flat
Unit 3: Solar Thermal plate collectors, selective coatings, advanced collectors, solar water
Conversion heaters, solar air heaters, solar cooker, solar dryers, solar stills, solar
pond, solar cooling and refrigeration.
• Thermal energy storage; Passive and active conditioning of buildings
Unit 4: Concentrated Solar • Conversion of heat into mechanical energy; Solar thermal power
generation.
Power
 Principle of photovoltaic conversion, fabrication of photovoltaic
devices, PV system applications (water pumping etc.), PV power
Unit 5: Solar Photovoltaics plant, PV system design and economics (off grid and on grid), new
generation solar cells and emerging technologies.
• Mechanism; Kinetics; Performance parameters; Applications. Recent
Unit 6: Solar Photocatalysis advances in solar energy technologies.
