Four selectable DSP filters virtually eliminates traffic noise and optimize filtering allowing use adjacent to
heavily traveled roadways and other “noisy” situations. It is powered by two AA batteries. The pickup head
ignores rustling grass and rain. Three removable spikes are provided to install in the pickup head when using
the unit on grass.
An internal magnetic impulse indicator assists in locating the fault by indicating (1) that the thumper is still
running: (2) that the user is walking the proper cable route; and (3) exactly when the thump occurs, so the
user can be listening carefully at that instant.

XV Series of VLF Test Equipment
Sinusoidal Output
The XV Series of VLF test equipment is the latest addition to the VON family of high
voltage test equipment, known worldwide as the most reliable high voltage test
equipment available. Our advanced design provides you with a rugged, easy to use
system that is easily portable to your test site. Digital menu based controls and an
onscreen instruction system make the system easy to operate.
The VON XV Series is designed to be easily portable, or permanently mounted in a vehicle. Systems can also
be mounted in a vehicle in such a way as to allow them to be removed to access test sites that cannot be
accessed by vehicle. Portable systems are designed in one piece with an integrated hand trucks. This allows
one person to easily move the entire system over rough terrain to access the test location. The system is
designed to allow easy loading and unloading from any standard truck. Runners are provided for sliding the
unit into small trucks and vans, and a lifting point is provided for taller vehicles such as aerial lift trucks.
THEORY: The capacitive discharge system is the most universally accepted way to locate underground cable faults. It is
still the only system that works reliably on shielded cable such as URD type concentric neutral cable.

CAPACITOR NEUTRAL
The objective of the system is to dump the stored electrical energy in the impulse capacitor into the cable fault such that
an audible noise or thump is made. The thump should be loud enough to be heard and felt by personnel without
detectors walking above the cable. The amount of energy available at the fault to "thump" the ground or ductwork is
related to the characteristics of the fault gap, the electrical impedance of the path from the discharge capacitor to the
fault and back, the energy in the discharge, the voltage of the discharge, and the rise time of the discharge. A fast rise
time provides maximum noise at the fault with the least energy.
After each discharge, the power supply must charge the capacitor bank. The variable autotransformer on the power
supply is used to adjust the rate of discharge. VON systems are designed for a continuous rate of discharge every six
seconds at 30kv. The discharge voltage of the capacitor is related to the impulse control gap voltage and the fault gap
voltage since they are in series. By adjusting the impulse control gap, the impulse capacitor can be charged to its rated
voltage regardless of the characteristics of the fault gap. This allows the fault to be located with minimum energy and
voltage. To locate a fault the voltage rating of the discharge capacitor must exceed the voltage rating of the fault gap.
The 35kv maximum discharge voltage has proven to be sufficient for all presently installed solid dielectric distribution
cable.
MI-88
Magnetic Impulse Indicator
The VON 20mm sphere gap consists of a gap assembly and a 115k ohm
GZZ non-inductive resistor. The VON 6.25 sphere gap consists of a gap
assembly and a one-megohm type GZZ non-inductive resistor. The VON
12.5 cm sphere gap consists of a gap assembly, two one-megohm GZZ non-
inductive resistors, and one 6" hollow stainless steel ball for the output
terminal.
Note: Daily use of this monitor does not eliminate the need to perform periodic over-voltage tests on aerial lift devices.
The absolute minimum recommended over-voltage test should be a DC test of 2.1 times the line to ground exposure or
an AC test of 1.5 times the line to ground exposure.

DC Hipot to 45kV
B-.45 shown with included leads.
The VON B-.35 and B-.45 are designed to be the most reliable 35 and 45kV
testers available. They can be used for most Industrial and Substation
testing including insulation resistance, dielectric absorption, DC hipot and
polarization index tests. Units can be operated off of 120V AC or 12V DC
with the optional inverter and a light, easily portable design makes no job
site too remote.
THE MEGOHM SCALE: Megohms are listed above both the 0-10 and 0-30 scales on the output current meter. To measure
megohms resistance with minimum calculation, set the output voltage precisely on a value selected from the chart. Turn
the output current range switch to the lowest range or until the output meter reads in the middle or the right third of its
scale. Record the megohm reading just above the current scale used and multiply this by the multiplier found on the cart
for megohms resistance. As a check, the minimum, center scale, and maximum resistance readings are listed for each
range setting.

The VON Corporation manufactures a complete line of Aerial Lift Test Sets. The model C-1 is the most
popular unit for distribution class trucks (Category C and Category A&B to 69kV).
Its 100kV output allows for testing of all Category C trucks and the largest bucket
liners. The use of DC allows testing of even the largest bucket liners without
purchasing extra large and heavy testers required of AC testers. All VON testers are
RATED FOR CONTINUOUS DUTY at full power, allowing continuous operation
without concern for damaging the tester, unlike many competitive units.
The model C-1.5+ provides for testing of category A&B trucks up to the 138kV class.
C series topping units can be used to extended testing up to cover even 500kV trucks.
DC testing of Aerial Lift provides several distinct advantages over AC testing. While
leakage currents are similar for both methods, AC units have to provide for capacitive coupling currents that
greatly affect the readings. These capacitive coupling currents can mask a dirty or defective boom that would
be detected by DC. These currents also require AC units to have very high output ratings (5kVA-15kVA) as
opposed to DC units, which are typically 500W, or less.
