know when to listen
Thumpphone III

Four Digital Filter Settings

The Thumpphone III is a solid state amplified listening device using the latest Digital Signal Processing (DSP)
Technology. It is designed to be used in conjunction with capacitive discharge impulse fault locators
(thumpers) to help in precisely locating underground cable faults.
The lightweight amplifier is hung around the operator’s neck and the rugged pickup head is tethered to it by a
5 foot braided nylon sheath containing the small connecting cable. Simple On/Off, Volume, and Filter
Selection Controls operate the unit. The internal active volume limiter reduces the maximum volume to a
comfortable level during loud transients such as dropping the pickup head. This allows the volume control to
be left as a high level while lifting the pickup head by its cable, moving it, and putting it down to listen.

Four selectable DSP filters virtually eliminates traffic noise and optimize filtering allowing use adjacent to
heavily traveled roadways and other “noisy” situations. It is powered by two AA batteries. The pickup head
ignores rustling grass and rain. Three removable spikes are provided to install in the pickup head when using
the unit on grass.

An internal magnetic impulse indicator assists in locating the fault by indicating (1) that the thumper is still
running: (2) that the user is walking the proper cable route; and (3) exactly when the thump occurs, so the
user can be listening carefully at that instant.

The VON XV Series of VLF test equipment is designed to meet all of you
needs for VLF testing of underground cables. VLF has been recognized by
industry as an alternative test method to the traditional high voltage DC
hipot test. VLF is designed to provide similar stresses to a 50/60 Hz AC
test, without the extremely high power and equipment requirements of such
a test.

VLF is specified as a 0.1 Hz or slower sinusoidal wave shape. At 0.1 Hz,

every cycle takes 10 seconds. The XV series will apply the voltage with a
microprocessor controlled power supply, which will raise the voltage in the
shape of a sinusoid in the first quarter cycle. The system will then
discharge the cable with a microprocessor controlled, fully variable discharge system. At the zero crossing the
system reverses polarity, and repeats the processes. Our fully variable discharge system allows us to reduce
power consumption, and maintain a true sinusoid without distortion across the full range of loads.

The VON XV Series is designed to be easily portable, or permanently mounted in a vehicle. Systems can also
be mounted in a vehicle in such a way as to allow them to be removed to access test sites that cannot be
accessed by vehicle. Portable systems are designed in one piece with an integrated hand trucks. This allows
one person to easily move the entire system over rough terrain to access the test location. The system is
designed to allow easy loading and unloading from any standard truck. Runners are provided for sliding the
unit into small trucks and vans, and a lifting point is provided for taller vehicles such as aerial lift trucks.

THEORY: The capacitive discharge system is the most universally accepted way to locate underground cable faults. It is
still the only system that works reliably on shielded cable such as URD type concentric neutral cable.

CENTER CONDUCTOR

FAULT
POWER CONTROL
IMPULSE GAP
SUPPLY GAP
CAPACITOR NEUTRAL

IMPULSE FAULT LOCATOR FAULTED CABLE

The basic capacitor discharge system consists of a capacitor, a high voltage D.C. power supply, and a means of
connecting and disconnecting the capacitor to the center conductor of the faulted cable such as an impulse control gap.
These components are shown in the simplified diagram below. The fault is shown as a gap. This is an accurate
description of faults on URD type cable since a fault is a hole or cut in the insulation between the center conductor and
the grounded semiconductor, shield wires and earth.

The objective of the system is to dump the stored electrical energy in the impulse capacitor into the cable fault such that
an audible noise or thump is made. The thump should be loud enough to be heard and felt by personnel without
detectors walking above the cable. The amount of energy available at the fault to "thump" the ground or ductwork is
related to the characteristics of the fault gap, the electrical impedance of the path from the discharge capacitor to the
fault and back, the energy in the discharge, the voltage of the discharge, and the rise time of the discharge. A fast rise
time provides maximum noise at the fault with the least energy.

After each discharge, the power supply must charge the capacitor bank. The variable autotransformer on the power
supply is used to adjust the rate of discharge. VON systems are designed for a continuous rate of discharge every six
seconds at 30kv. The discharge voltage of the capacitor is related to the impulse control gap voltage and the fault gap
voltage since they are in series. By adjusting the impulse control gap, the impulse capacitor can be charged to its rated
voltage regardless of the characteristics of the fault gap. This allows the fault to be located with minimum energy and
voltage. To locate a fault the voltage rating of the discharge capacitor must exceed the voltage rating of the fault gap.
The 35kv maximum discharge voltage has proven to be sufficient for all presently installed solid dielectric distribution
cable.
MI-88
Magnetic Impulse Indicator

Know when to Listen

The MI-88 magnetic impulse
indicator is designed to be hand-
held as the user walks along the
cable route listening for the
“thump” at the fault. When the
magnetic field surrounding the
cable during an electrical impulse
is sensed, it lights its high intensity
L.E.D., telling the user three things.
First that the impulser or “thumper”
is working; second that the user is
within a few feet of the cable
route; and third, precisely when
the thump occurs so that the user
can be listening more carefully at
that instant.

MI-88 with Penny Shown for Reference The instrument is housed in a

Figure els 15M and 20 rugged ABS plastic case. The high
intensity L.E.D., which is easily visible in sunlight, is powered by two standard AA
alkaline batteries. Since the indicator automatically “powers down” when no
impulses are present, no power switch is needed. In some cases battery life will
exceed five years. The rear cover is removable for battery replacement.

pinpointed easily by personnel walking
and listening along the cable for the
thump. Such cases may occur with
faults under city streets, in locations
where the ambient noise is great, in
cable buried in plastic pipe, and very
deeply buried faults.

sphere gap covers the range of voltage most
commonly used.

For calibration checks the 6.25cm sphere gap is

suitable to 78kv. For over voltage protection the
6.25cm sphere gap may be used to 115kv. In
operation the one megohm resistor assembly is
always mounted on top of the sphere gap in series
with the gap to prevent specimen damage and
pitting of the spheres

Sphere gaps are unexcelled for achieving

accurate over voltage protection for test
specimens. The gap is always connected to the
guard circuit of a VON tester so it does not affect
the leakage reading of the test specimen. The
gap is set to spill over just at the maximum voltage
(usually 3 to 15kv above the highest test voltage).
When this maximum voltage is reached the gap
will spill over with a relatively soft arc that will not
subject the specimen to damaging pulses. The arc
serves to warn the test operator of his error by
tripping the test set out or by draining off current
from the system faster than the test set can supply
it. This reduces the voltage on the specimen. After
such a spill over, the voltage must be reduced to
the deionizing voltage of the gap before the test
can resume

THE MEGOHM SCALE: Megohms are listed above both the 0-10 and 0-30 scales on the output current meter. To measure
megohms resistance with minimum calculation, set the output voltage precisely on a value selected from the chart. Turn
the output current range switch to the lowest range or until the output meter reads in the middle or the right third of its
scale. Record the megohm reading just above the current scale used and multiply this by the multiplier found on the cart
for megohms resistance. As a check, the minimum, center scale, and maximum resistance readings are listed for each
range setting.

Improved sensitivity of test over AC Testers

Model C-1

The VON Corporation manufactures a complete line of Aerial Lift Test Sets. The model C-1 is the most
popular unit for distribution class trucks (Category C and Category A&B to 69kV).
Its 100kV output allows for testing of all Category C trucks and the largest bucket
liners. The use of DC allows testing of even the largest bucket liners without
purchasing extra large and heavy testers required of AC testers. All VON testers are
RATED FOR CONTINUOUS DUTY at full power, allowing continuous operation
without concern for damaging the tester, unlike many competitive units.

The model C-1.5+ provides for testing of category A&B trucks up to the 138kV class.
C series topping units can be used to extended testing up to cover even 500kV trucks.

DC testing of Aerial Lift provides several distinct advantages over AC testing. While
leakage currents are similar for both methods, AC units have to provide for capacitive coupling currents that
greatly affect the readings. These capacitive coupling currents can mask a dirty or defective boom that would
be detected by DC. These currents also require AC units to have very high output ratings (5kVA-15kVA) as
opposed to DC units, which are typically 500W, or less.
