Crochet Barn Owl Pattern: Rebekah Fair Rebekah Fair

This crochet pattern provides instructions for making a barn owl with multiple parts requiring different colors and materials. It is a difficult pattern that requires careful reading of the entire set of instructions before beginning. Key parts include the head, wings, legs, and tail, with steps to attach the completed pieces during assembly. The creator provides warnings that the owl is not a toy and some wire pieces may extend outward from the finished owl.

38. (sc in next st, sk 1) 4 times, sc in last 2st-6-F/O

Note: My original pattern had 40 rows; but because I moved his face up the 2nd time around,

I got rid of two “sc around” rows.

Right Side of Face (use F hook and white yarn)

1. work 6 into ring-6

2. 2sc in each st around-12

3. (sc in next st, 2sc in next st) around-18

Note: Make sure the first st of the last row is marked.

Left Side of Face (use F hook and white yarn)

Note: Always sc (or hdc) in 2nd st from hook at beginning of each row, unless otherwise

instructed. (In other words you sk the first ch at the beginning of each row)

1. ch 40, turn, sc in next 24ch, sk 1, sc across-38

2. ch 1, turn, sc in next 24st, hdc in next 14st-38

6. ch 1, turn, sc in next 22st, hdc in next 13st-35

7. ch 1, turn, sk 1, hdc in next 13st, sc across-34

8. ch 1, turn, sc in next 20st, hdc in next 12st-32 Note: After this row it gets a little confusing.

What I’m doing is working around the rows we’ve just done, making rows 9-27 look more

like feathers. I will not acknowledge the stitches left from prier rows in the stitch count at the

end of each row, but you will be crocheting in them to connect rows 9-27 to the prier rows.

9. ch 1, turn, turn, sk 1, hdc in next 12st, sc in next st-13

10. ch 1, turn, hdc in next 11st-11

27. ch 1, turn, hdc in next 6st, sk 1, sc in next st-7-F/O

Head/Back/Tail (use F hook and tan yarn)

Note: It is very important that you pay close attention to this pattern because it is very easy to

get lost. When it says “slst (sc, hdc, or dc) in next ch” at the end of rows 2-23, that means you

work in a ch from the ch 29 in row 1. I suggest that after each row you count your stitches to

make sure that everything is still correct. Also, at the end of row 15-19, make sure you have 7

chs left on both sides. If you find that you have one more or less st on either side, and do not

want to start over, you may either sk 1 ch or 2sc in last ch so that you have the correct number

of stitches. When fitting onto Head/Body, see Assembly: Sewing at the end of the pattern.

53. ch 2, turn, hdc in next 8st, sc in next 4st, sk 1 (st from row 50), sc in next st-13

54-63. Repeat rows 52 and 53 until you get to the end of row 50 (5 more times)-13-F/O

64. Repeat row 52-12-F/O

Note: After row 50, you can-ch 1, turn, sc across-(instead of doing rows 52-64) until it’s long

enough for a tail; but only if preferred. Then you would need to change the Back of Tail pattern.

Back of Tail (use F hook and white yarn)

1. ch 15, turn, in 3rd st from hook, hdc in next 8ch, sc in next 5ch-13

2. ch 1, turn, in 3rd st from hook, sc in next across-13

3. ch 1, turn, in 3rd st from hook, hdc in next 8st, sc in next 5st-13

14. Repeat row 2-13-F/O

Legs (use F hook and grey yarn first, then white yarn; make 2)

1. work 6 into ring-6

2-3. sc in each st around-6 Note: STOP after 3rd row and look at Assembly: Wire

4. (change to white yarn) sc in next st, 2sc in next st, sc in next 2st, 2sc in next st, sc in next st-8

13. sc in next 4st, 2sc in next st, sc in next 5st-11-F/O-leave *long tail* (see Assembly: Feet)

Front Talons/Toes (use F hook and black yarn first, then grey yarn; make 6)

Note: The first 4 rows can be a bit tricky; so if you’d rather not do them you can simply skip the

first 4 rows and do-work 4sc into ring-instead of row 4; then continue to do rows 5-8. Then,

crochet the talons separately using the Talons pattern (below). However, you would then need

to change the length of the “wire” toes (see Assembly: Wire and Feet); then sew on the Talons.

1. work 2 into ring-2

2-3. sc in each st around-2

4. (change to grey yarn) in BLO, 3sc in next st, sc in next st-4

5. sc in each st around-4

6. sc in first st, sk 1, sc in next 2st-3

7. sc in first st, 2sc in next st, sc in next st-4

8. sc in first st, sk 1, sc in next 2st-3-F/O-leave *long tail* (see Assembly: Feet)

Back Talons/Toes (use F hook and black yarn first, then grey yarn; make 2)

Note: Please read the Note from the Front Talons/Toes pattern (above).

1. work 2 into ring-2

2-3. sc in each st around-2

4. (change to grey yarn) in BLO, 3sc in next st, sc in next st-4

5. sc in first st, sk 1, sc in next 2st-3

6. sc in first st, 2sc in next st, sc in next st-4-F/O-leave *long tail* (see Assembly: Feet)

(Separate) Talons (use F hook and black yarn, make 8)

1. ch 4, turn, in 2nd ch from hook and last 2 chs, slst across-4-F/O

Note: You could also embroider the talons instead of doing the Talons pattern above.

Beak (use F hook and peach yarn)

1. ch 5, turn, slst in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 2chs, ch 1-F/O

Assembly:

Face- (use F hook) To connect Left Side of Face and Right Side of Face, draw up a loop in

*9th st* of Left Side of Face, sc in 10th,11th,and 12th sts, hdc in 13th st, sk to Right Side of

Face to 14th st, hdc in 14th st, sc in next 3st-8-F/O. Draw up a loop in 10th st (from the

last row you just made), sc in next 3st, sk 1, sc in next 2st-5-F/O. In 6th st from beginning

of Right Side of Face and 8th st behind beginning of Left Side of Face, sew in BLO, down

the middle of the face. Place 12mm eyes in the middle of each side of face, but don’t

put washer on back. Sew on beak a few stitches under the eyes in the center of his

face. Weave in all ends (leftover strings) between stitches. (see pictures…)

11
Drawing up a loop-

Row 1 (skipping to right side of face) Row 1 (finished)

Row 2 Sew in BLO down the middle of face

12
Weave in ends Sew on beak

Eye Placement- After you’ve placed the eyes in the left and right sides of face; put eyes

(along with the face) on Head/Body in between rows 8 and 9; put the left (his left) eye in after

the 24th st ,and the right (his right) eye in after the 30th st (6 stitches apart). Since you must get

the eyes through two layers, it will be difficult putting the washers on.

Stuffing- Stuff Head/Body firmly. Lightly stuff Legs after you’ve put the wire in (see

Wire below). However, if you do not want wire in the legs, then firmly stuff legs. If you did not

put wire in the toes, then lightly stuff toes if desired.

Sewing- When you put the Head/Back/Tail section onto the Head/Body it might not

fit perfectly and may look a little lumpy near the top. If so, simply stretch it a bit and

smooth it out until it looks the way you want. Place the side pieces below the face. If

desired, use pins to put the Head/Back/Tail into place onto the Head/Body piece. Then

sew top part of Head/Back/Tail onto Head/Body piece using tan yarn and a yarn needle

(see pictures…)

13
Head/Back/Tail placed on Head/Body Head/Back/Tail stretched and smoothed

Sewing Head/Back/Tail piece on side of face-

Closing hole- -pull through then pull hard to close

14
Continue sewing around head-

Tail- Now, before you continue sewing down his sides, stop and put (and pin) the Back of Tail

onto the Tail. With your F hook and white yarn, sc around the outside edges (3 sides) of both tail pieces

at the same time-F/O. Make sure you 3sc in both corners. Then sew on the remaining side of the Back

of Tail onto the Head/Body piece using your yarn needle and white yarn (see pictures…)

Pinning on tail-

Sc both tails together- 3sc in both corners-

15
Tail after sc together-

Sew on the remaining side of tail-

Continue sewing across tail-

16
Tuck in ends-

After you’ve finished crocheting and sewing the tail, you can continue to sew up (or down) both

sides of the body with your yarn needle and tan yarn (see pictures…)

Sides of Head/Back/Tail piece sewn onto sides of Head/Body-

17
Wire- Now we’re going to take a break from sewing and prepare our wire for the Wings and

Feet/Legs. First we’ll get the Strong Floral Wire ready for the Wings. So, take one 12in piece of Strong

Floral Wire and your Needle-nose Pliers. Then, with your Needle-nose Pliers, hold the tip (make sure

you pinch the Pliers down as close to the tip as possible!) of one end of your wire and bend it as far as

you can. Then take your Pliers again and squeeze the bent end of the wire to the other end of the wire

together. Do the same thing with your other 12in piece of Strong Floral Wire (see pictures…)

Bend the tip of the 12in piece of wire with pliers-

Squeeze both ends of the wire together-

We will now work on the wire for the Feet/Legs. Take one 24in. piece of Thin Floral Wire and

your ruler. Starting from one end of the wire, use your ruler to measure 4 and ½ in. then bend at a

perpendicular angle. (Then measure 2in. from prier bend and bend so that it is parallel to the last piece

18
of bent wire [forming one toe]) repeat from ( to ) 5 times; forming 3 toes. Now measure 1 and ½ in.

from center of foot (base of front 3 toes) and bend, creating the back toe. If desired, weave first 4 and ½

in. piece and last piece of wire in between front toes, which makes the foot more stable; then bend first

and last pieces of wire perpendicular (straight up) to the toes; then twist together. (It can be a bit

difficult weaving the wire between the toes, so you might want to skip that part) To sum it all up, the 3

front toes should all be 2in. long, the back toe should be 1 and ½ in. long, and the leg should be a little

more than 4 and ½ in. long. Make two of these. If you find that the instructions above only confuse

you, then you will have to rely on the pictures below (see pictures…)

4 and ½ in. -bend- 2in.-bend-

Three, 2in. front toes- One, 1in. back toe-

19
Weaving “leg” wire in between toes and entwining “leg” wire-

Feet- First you’ll need to crochet the first 3 rows of the Leg pattern. After you’ve done that, take

the wire frame of the feet/leg you just made (above) and bend all four toes downward so that they’re

almost parallel to the “leg” wire instead of perpendicular to it. Now take the first 3 rows of the Leg you

made and put the first three front wire toes after the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd st of the Leg, and put the back wire

toe after the 5th st (two sts away from the front three toes). Then put the toes perpendicular to the

“leg” wire again. Continue to crochet the Leg (working around the “leg” wire). After Leg is complete,

slip front and back toes (after they are crocheted, of course) onto wire toes. Before you sew the toes

on, cut all loose strings from the toes off except the *long tail* you left. Then, with your Yarn Needle

and *long tail*, sew toes onto Legs (see pictures…)

Put wire toes in base of leg- Put wire toes perpendicular to leg-

20
Cut off loose strings-

Sew on toes-

Sewing- Now we’re going to sew on the legs. First stick the “leg” wire (there should be some

sticking out of the Leg) in between stitches on the Head/Body, about 8 stitches a part. With the *long

tail* you left and your Yarn Needle, sew Legs onto Head/Body (see pictures…)

21
Stick wire from Legs into Head/Body- Sew Legs on Head/Body-

22
Face Edging- In BLO-With your F hook and dark brown yarn, slst in the top left corner of face.

Then, continuing in BLO, (sc in next st , slst in next st) until you get to about the same spot on the right

side of face as you started on the left side of face (about five times)-F/O. Then skip about nine stitches

(to bottom right side of face) and (still in BLO) sc in next st (with same hook and dark brown yarn). Then,

still crocheting in BLO, (hdc in next st, sc in next st) until you get to about the same spot on the left side

of face as you started on the right side of face-F/O. Now, with your F hook and tan yarn, (and in BLO the

whole way around except in the dark brown stitches) starting just after where you just left off with your

dark brown yarn, (sc in next st, slst in next st) around-F/O. Don’t worry if the stitches don’t match up

perfectly. (see pictures…)

Two dark brown crocheted strips- Tan all the way around-

Embroidering Eyes- To embroider around eyes, you’ll need your yarn needle and dark brown

yarn. You will be using the Back Stitch and Chain Stitch techniques (see pictures…)

23
Back Stitch-

Chain Stitch-

24
Wings- First you will need to crochet the wings together. So, take one tan wing, one white

wing, your F hook, and your white yarn. Then, starting on whichever end makes the white wing face

towards you, begin to sc around wing. 1. If you start crocheting on the top side of the wing, then take

the 12 in. piece of wire and crochet it into the wing as you crochet across the top of wing (then

continue to crochet around wing: see pictures) 2. If not, then be prepared to crochet the 12 in. wire

into the wing when you crochet around to the top side. Please Note: You will have to do both 1. and

2. for both wings if the wings are to fit onto the body properly. (The end of the wire that you bent

should be the farthest away from Head/Body) Make sure you 3sc in the corner of both wings. When

you come to the “crack” in between the feathers (rows 15 and 16 of Wings), slst across both sides of it;

then continue to sc around wing until you get to the straight side of the wing-F/O Now take your F hook

and tan yarn and crochet on top of wing over the white stitches. Crochet (sc in next st, 2sc in next st)

across; 3sc in last stitch. Don’t worry if your stitches don’t match perfectly. Then, after you’ve finished

crocheting across the tops of the wings, F/O (see pictures…)

Sc wire into

25
3sc in corner of wing-

26
Crocheting tan onto top of wing-

27
Sew the Wings on- Stick leftover wire from Wings on the line in between the Head/Back/Tail

and the Head/Body, about one row of stitches under the bottom of the face. Use your yarn needle and

your white yarn (to sew on the white side of both wings) and your tan yarn (to sew on the tan side of

both wings). Then sew on both Wings. Weave or tuck in all ends (see pictures…)

Sew on white side of wing-

Sew on tan side of wing-

Finished!

28
After you’ve completed your barn owl and have played around with him a bit, you may find that

the wire in his toes and/or his wings stick out from the end(s) (that is, if you decided to put the wire in).

If so, simply pull the crocheted end(s) of his toes and/or wing over the exposed wire. If this does not

work, you may need to adjust the position of the wire so the crocheted end(s) fits over it more easily

(see pictures…)

Congratulations! You’re done making your barn owl!
