MEEN 4325 Intermediate Fluid Mechanics (3 Credit Hours)

This course covers intermediate fluid mechanics concepts including differential analysis of conservation equations, compressible flow theory, boundary layer theory, and irrotational flow theory. The course objectives are to develop students' understanding of conservation principles of mass, momentum and energy in differential form, and apply these principles to various flow fields. Students will be evaluated based on concept inventories, homework, exams, and projects. The instructor recommends specific fluid mechanics textbooks and provides tips for students to succeed such as reading assignments, not falling behind, seeking help early, and reworking problems before tests.

V Course Outcomes
(a) an ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering
(e) an ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems
VI Textbooks: There is no required textbook, but I recommend one of the following:

Fluid Mechanics by Frank M. White ISBN: 978-0-07-352934-9

Introduction to Fluid Mechanics by Pritchard, Fox and McDonald (my favorite)
Fluid Mechanics by Cengel and Cimbala

Purchase any edition you want.

VII Testing: (Opportunities to Excel)

Testing is a necessary requirement to demonstrate your mastery of the material; it is an opportunity. All
tests (opportunities) will be open book/closed notes unless otherwise stated. You can bring one of the
textbooks (or equivalent) listed above.

XI Helpful Hints for Success:

 Read the book sections we are covering in class.

 Don’t let yourself fall behind in the course.
 At the first sign of trouble come see me or seek help.
 I recommend that you study in a group but DO YOUR HOMEWORK INDEPENDENTLY.
 Rework, from scratch, all homework problems before a test.
 Always check your units.
