Can / Could / Be able to

A
Can WE LEAVE YET?
The Davis family is getting ready to go to the airport. They couldn’t go on vacation last year
because they were moving. But last month Pete was able to get them four tickets to Hawaii.
Pete: Hurry up, everyone! We have to leave in half an hour.
Mary: Pete, could you please help Tom? He can’t close his suitcase. He’s been trying, but he
isn’t able to do it by himself.
Pete: Of course I can help him. Can you finish packing our suitcase?
Mary: Yes, I can.
Leila: Mommy, could I take these toys with me on the plane?
Mary: You can’t take all those toys. There’s no room in your suitcase.
Leila: I could put them in the carry-on bag, couldn’t I?
Mary: No. You won’t be able to carry them all. You can choose two small toys and put them
in the bag.
Pete: Mary, were you able to find our sunglasses? We can’t go to Hawaii without sunglasses,
can we?
Mary: No, we can’t. But I could only find my sunglasses. I couldn’t find yours. You’ll be able
to buy a new pair in Hawaii.
Tom: Mommy, when we board the plane, can I have the window seat?
Mary: You could ask for a window seat at the check-in.

Tips for Renting a Car
1. You must find out about all the kinds of cars available. Compact cars are usually the
cheapest, but midsize cars are more comfortable.
2. Ask about special deals. The car rental agent has to give you a special price for long-term
rentals.
3. You don’t have to make a reservation with most car rental companies. But the car you want
may not be available if you don’t make a reservation.
4. The car rental company doesn’t have to include a GPS in the price. You must pay extra for a
GPS in most rental cars. You don’t have to get a GPS if you know your way around. But it’s
worth it if you don’t know the city. You won’t have to use a map to find your way.
5. The car rental company has to give you a full tank of gas. Always check that you have a full
gas tank when you get the car. You mustn’t forget to return the car with a full tank of gas!

Reflexive Pronouns / Had Better

A My family and I are very busy. We are fixing up the house for guests who are coming to stay.
We’d better hurry because the guests will be here in a little while!
My husband and I painted the guest room ourselves. We didn’t have a lot of money to redecorate,
so I made the curtains myself. Tim is good at making things, too. He put up the new shelf in the
bathroom by himself. They’d better be strong! The guests will put all their toiletries on the shelf.
I’ve already put shampoo, conditioner, soap and new toothbrushes there in case the guests need
them.
The children have been helping us. Martha, who is only four, dressed herself. She is wearing a
gorgeous white dress. Now she is helping me prepare dinner by stirring the tomato soup.
I’d better cover her dress with a towel so it doesn’t get dirty!
Is someone at the door? Oh no, our guests are early! I’ll answer the door. Tom, you’d better not
let the roast chicken burn!
Hello, Peter! Hi, Kate! Please come in. Make yourselves at home!

May / Might / Can / Could / Must / Mustn’t

A Sara was on her way to the airport when she began to have car trouble. She stopped at the side
of the road. She tried calling the AAA on her cellular phone but she couldn’t get a signal. “What
can I do?” she wondered. “I mustn’t miss my flight.”
“It might just be a flat tire,” she thought, as she got out of the car. “That’s not a big problem.
I can change a tire in only ten minutes.” But when Sara checked her tires, she saw that they
were all fine. “What could be the problem?” she wondered.
Suddenly Sara saw the headlights of another car. It stopped and a man got out.
“Can I help you?” he offered. Sara couldn’t help smiling. It was Ted, her neighbor.
“Ted, I’m so glad to see you. Could you tell me why my car won’t start?”
“The battery may be dead.” Ted got into Sara’s car and turned the key. “Yes, that’s what it is.”
“Could I borrow your jumper cables, Ted?”
“Of course you can. I can get them for you if you wait a second. They’re in the trunk of my car.
I’ll connect the cables to your engine while you get ready to start it. You mustn’t start the engine
before I tell you to, OK?”
