I.ESSAY

1. Explain why it is essential to understand the self.
Answer: It is essential to understand the self because if you understand yourself you will know
what is your strengths and weaknesses, your limitations and capabilities. You will know how to
handle yourself when you are facing a mental breakdown. Also if you understand yourself, you
have a sense of value thus, you don’t need someones approval or appreciation since you already
know and understand yourself. Thus understanding self can bring you a better life and great views
and perspective on life.

2. Describe and discuss the different motions of the the self from the points-of-view of the
various philosophers across time and place.
Answer: For Socrates a person is dualistics and the self for him is composed of body and soul where
the body is an imperfect and impermanent aspect while the soul is the permanent and perfect.
While for Plato for him there are threee components of soul; the rational soul which is incharge of
reason and intellect; the spirited sould which is encharged of emotions; and apperative soul which is
base on desires. Augustine on the other hand define self as that composed of body where it is
bound to die while the soul anticipate on the eternally realm. For him The goal of every human
person is to attain this communion and bliss with the divine by living his life on earth in virtue. For
Thomas Aquinas self is composed of 2 parts which is the matter(hyle) which is the mans body; and
form (morphe) where it is the essence of the substance. Rene Descartes concluded self that it has 2
distint entities which is the mind where it controls everything on what we do in life; and body where
it is nothing but a machines that is attached to the mind. While David Hume perception of self is
uniquebecause for him self is nothing but a bundle of different perceptions, which succeed each
other with an inconvceivable rapidity, and are perpetual flux of movement. Also for him, experiences
can be categorized into 2 which is the impression and ideas. Immanuel Kant’s opinion about self is
not just what gives one his personality, it is also the seat of knowledge acquisition for all human
person. And for Gilbert Ryle self is not an entity that one can locate and analyze but simply the
convenient name that people use to refer all the behavior that people make. Lastly for Merleau-
Ponty asserts that mind and body are so intertwined that they cannot be seperated from one
another. For him the living body, thoughts, emotions, and experiences are all one.
3. Compare and contrast how the self can be influenced by the different institutions in the
society.
Answer: Our self can be easily influence by different instutions in the society such as the influence
of social world, influence of our families, influence of culture and many more. Our self is easily
influenced by these common institutions because this institutions the self With these institutions it
can help shape us become who we are today. Like in the social world,
