Volumetrics PDF

This document discusses important considerations for accurately calculating reservoir volumetrics in simulation models. It recommends setting the datum depth at the oil-water contact with the initial reservoir pressure as the reference pressure. It also stresses the importance of defining the relationship between dissolved gas and depth to account for how formation volume factor varies with pressure and depth from the water-oil contact to the gas-oil contact. Defining these fluid property variations correctly allows the simulator to use the proper formation volume factor and calculate the accurate original oil in place.

• Setting a datum depth at the oil-water contact and using the initial reservoir pressure as the reference pressure is a great way of initializing the reservoir
and calculating its volumetric. Since Formation volume factor varies with pressure and pressure varies with depth, initializing our reservoir must be done
with a good knowledge of these variations.

• A relationship describing the variation of the dissolved gas vs depth must be defined to the simulator if your set datum is at WOC. In this case, it
enables the simulator to determine the fluid column or region of constant solution gas oil ratio. Solution gas oil ratio will typically be constant from WOC
to GOC as in Fig 1.

• If the solution gas vs depth is defined correctly, the simulator can use the proper formation volume factor to determine the accurate oil originally in
place. In this case, Boi. See Fig 2.

• The datum depth can be set anywhere in the reservoir through your simulator, but you must remember to use the appropriate reference pressure and
define the fluid properties variations with depth where applicable.
