Foreword
GSO through the technical program of committee TC No.:.(5) " Gulf technical committee
for standards of food and agriculture products " has prepared the GSO Standard No. GSO
…./2011 . Labeling of prepackaged substances used in food products industry
The Draft Standard has been prepared by (STATE OF QATAR) .
This standard has been approved as a Gulf Technical Regulation by GSO Board of
Directors in its meeting No.( ), held on h ( G) .

This Gulf Standard is concerned with labeling of prepackaged substances used in food
products industry, and not fit for directly human consumption, and specifies the
requirements relating to the presentation method therefore.
2-Complementary Standards:
2.1Gso 1018:”General requirements for storage, transport and handling of edible oils in
bulk”.
2.2 GSO 1916:”Dates in bulk”.
2.3 GSO 1310:” Glucose syrup” .
3-Definitions:
3.1 Label:
Any statement, brand, mark, pictorial or any other descriptive matter whether
written, printed / impressed or stuck on the container of a foodstuff or attached
thereto , in such a manner as not to be removable.
3.2 Labeling:
Includes any marking, imaging or graphic matter that is present on the label
associated with the qualities, components or nutritional characteristics of a food
product, or with its nature, preparation , consumption or any other properties
thereof.
3.4 Container:
Any material in which a foodstuff is prepackaged to be delivered for sale as a
separate individual unit , whether by completely or partially wrapping the food . It
may enclose several units or types of wrappings when such is offered to the consumer.
4-General requirements:
4.1 A prepackaged substance shall not be described or presented on any label or in any
labeling whether by words , pictorial or any other medium which refer to or are
suggestive either directly or indirectly of any other substance, with which such

4.3 Any substance used for food products industry shall not offer directly for consumers.
5.1.1 The name of prepackaged substance shall identify and the true nature of the food
and shall normally be specific and not generic.
5.1.2In the case of the prepackaged substance containing from more than one
component, the name of these components shall be written in descending according to
their ratio presence, the name of the biggest ratio component shall be written first, then
the component in less ratio and so like.
5.1.3 The statement “use in food products industry” shall be written on the label.
The suitable information shall be written on the label of the substances used in food
products industry to declare the method of keeping and the guidelines for using.
The name and address of the manufacturer, packer, distributor, importer, exporter
or vendor shall be declared.

5.5.1 The country of origin of the food shall be declared on the food containers if its
omission would mislead or deceive the consumer about the item , especially in the
case of repacking.
5.5.2 When a foodstuff undergoes processing in a second country which may probably
change its fundamental nature, the country where the processing has taken place
shall be considered as the country of origin for labeling purposes.
5.6.1 The labeling of substances used in food products industry which has been subjected
to genetic modified or ionizing radiation ,shall be declare this with written and
International Symbols in close proximity to the substance name.
5.6.2 It shall be declaring this with written and International Symbols on the products
processed from these substances.
Without prejudice to what mentioned in Gulf Standard concerned with Expiry date for
food products for substances used in food products industry:
5.7.1 Companies for manufacturers producing substances used in food products industry
shall be specify the actually expiry periods for these substances as follows:
5.7.1.1 for substances with a minimum durability less than three months (day-month-
year) in non-coded manner.
5.7.1.2 For substances with a minimum durability more than three months (month-year)
in non-coded manner.
5.8 Any chemical treatments which has been carried out on the substances used in
food products industry.
6.1.1 The information on the label of substances used in food products industry shall be

6.1.2 The labels shall be placed in a manner not allow to irremovable from the containers.
6.1.4 The label shall not contain any chemicals or so, the ink used therein shall not be
oozing .
6.2 Language:
6.2.1 The labeling on the label of substances used in food products industry shall be in
Arabic language.
6.2.3.1 It shall be a single sticker provided by the manufacture only, to fulfill all the
relevant stipulations provided in this standard..
6.2.3.3 It shall not contain any statement discrepant with the original labeling.
6.2.3.4 It shall be irremovable in the ordinary handling and circulation conditions of these
products.
6.2.3.5 It is not allow putting another sticker for production and expiry dates.
7. OPTIONAL LABELLING:
7.1 Additional statements, pictorial or graphic matters may be either written impressed
or photographed on the label, provided that they shall neither contradict with mandatory
labeling method , nor contain any medicinal or therapeutic declaration, or breach the
provisions of this standard.
7.2 When marking the product grade declaration it shall be legibly understandable and
not entail deception or misleading in any way.

7.3 If the foodstuff consists of two ingredients or more, the class name of the main
ingredient may be listed with the rest of ingredients in a descending sequence by
weight (m/m); but an ingredient with the proportion of less than 5% of the foodstuff shall
not be included in the list of ingredients.
