Heat Transfer Operation Marks - 20 Class Test - I Date - /2018

This document contains a heat transfer class test with 4 questions. Question 1 asks about the fraction of energy emitted by one black body surface that is received by another. Question 2 gives parameters of a black body enclosed in walls and asks for the black body's temperature. Question 3 defines grey body, radiation shield, and Wien's displacement law. Question 4 has 3 subquestions about radiant heat transfer calculations involving emissivity, black and grey bodies, and wavelength of maximum radiation.

HEAT TRANSFER OPERATION

MARKS – 20 CLASS TEST – I DATE – 10/04/2018

CO – 3 :-

1. Consider two black bodies with surface S1 (area= 1m 2) and S2 (area=4m2). They exchange heat
only by radiation, 40% of the energy emitted by S1 is received by S2. The fraction of energy
emitted by S2 that is received by S1 is_____________________. (2)

2. A Black Body of total area 0.045m2 is completely enclosed in a space bounded by 5cm thick walls
having surface area 0.5m2 and K= 1.07W/ m 0C. If the inner surface of the enveloping wall is to
be maintained at 215 C and outer wall at 300 0C, find the temperature of the black body. Neglect
the difference between inner and outer surface areas of enveloping material. (6)

3. Define : (2*3=6)
A) Grey Body
B) Radiation shield
C) Wien’s displacement law

4. Solve : (2*3=6)
2
a) The radiant heat transfer from a plate of 2.5cm area at 1250K to a cold enclosure is 5W.
Find emissivity of the plate at temperature.
b) If a black body at 1000K and a grey body at 1250K emits the same amount of radiation, what
should be the emissivity ?
c) A small black body has a total emissive power of 5.65 kw/m 2. Find the wave length for
maximum radiation.
