Ques - What do you mean by a Number ?
Ans - A number is a Mathematical object used to count, measure and
label.

Numbers are expressed by means of figure – 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9


and 0 called digit.

0 – Insignificant digit

1,2,3,4… etc. – Significant digit


Even Number – The numbers which are divisble by 2 is known as Even
Number.
e.g. 2 , 4 , 6 , 8 etc.

Odd Number - The numbers which are not divisble by 2 is known as Odd
Number.
e.g. 3 , 9 , 11 , 13 etc.

Prime Number – A number which is divisble by 1 and itself is called


Prime Number.
e.g. 2 , 3 , 5 , 7 , 11 , 13 Etc.

Composite Number – the numbers which are not prime are called
Composite Number.
e.g. 4 , 6 , 8 , 9
Natural Number – Numbers which starts from 1 are known as Natural
Number. They are denoted by N.
e.g. 1,2,3,4,5,6…….

Whole Numbers (W) - When we include zero in the set of natural


number then it becomes the set of whole numbers.
e.g. 0,1,2,3,4,5,6……

Integers – the set of numbers which consist of whole numbers and negative
numbers is known as set of Integers. They are denoted by Q.
e.g. -2,-1,0,1,2……

Rational Numbers – the numbers which can be written in the form of ,

where a and b are integers and b ≠ 0 are called rational numbers.

Irrational Numbers – the numbers which can not be written in the form of

(where a and b are integers and b ≠ 0 ) are known as irrational

numbers.

Real Numbers – the collection of Rational & Irrational number are knows
as Real Numbers.

Complex Number - A Complex number is a number that can be


expressed in the form a + ib , where a is called the real part and
b is called the imaginary part.
