Detailed Lesson Plan

In Mathematics 6
Content Standard: Learners demonstrate understanding of getting the volume of cylinder.
Performance Standard: The learners are able to use the formula of getting the volume of a
cylinder
I. Learning Competencies: ate the end of the lesson, the learners will be able
to:
1. Derive a formula in finding the volume of a cylinder.
2. Use the formula in finding the volume of a cylinder.
3. Participate actively in class and cooperate with the group activities.
II. Content: Volume of a Solid Figures (cylinder)
III. Learning Resources: 21st century Mathletes, teacher’s guide
References: 21st century Mathletes, teacher’s guide, mathwarehouse.com
Materials: books, pictures, PowerPoint presentation and activity kit
IV. Procedure

Teacher’s Activity Pupils’ Activity

A. Preparatory Activity
1. Drill
Give me the answers of the following:

3.6 x 6 x 2 4.3 x 2 x 8 8.1 x 6 x 1 Answers:

43.2

89.06
378
Very good!

2. Review
What was the last formula that we discussed?
We discussed about the formula of
Very good. Thank you. getting the volume of cubic
I have here this cubic pyramid. If the base is 5dm pyramid.
and the height is 3dm, what is its volume?

V =bh ²
Its volume is 45dm³.
Correct! What if the height is 7m and the base is
4m, what is the volume of a cubic pyramid? The volume is 196m³

Very good!
Let us now proceed.

3. Motivation
Let me play this video clip before we proceed.
Let’s sing along with the music.

Alright! Have you enjoyed it? Yes, Ma’am.

Good! Let’s now proceed.
What are the examples of a cylinder-like object? A can of sardines.
A mug of coffee.
A casserole.
A battle of soda.
B. Developmental Activities
1. Presentation
We are going to study in finding the volume of a
cylinder. I have here this mug.

But before that, what again is the formula in

getting the surface area of a cylinder? The formula in getting the surface
area of a cylinder is SA=πrh+ πr 2.
Correct!

Now, I’m going to introduce you first in deriving a

formula of finding the volume of a cylinder.
I’ll gonna use the formulaV =π r 2 h. Suppose that
the unit of measurement used is m.
(show the solution on the board with the
cooperation of the pupils) The volume is 141.3m³!
So, the answer will be what?
Correct!
Another example. Please show the solution on the
board using the given formula. Show your solution.
Cedric?

(went on the board and show the

answer)

Use centimeters as the unit measurement.

75.36cm³ is the answer.
Now what is the answer?
Yes, Ma’am!
Is that correct?

2. Comparison and Abstraction

Again, when we are getting the volume of a solid
figure, what are we measuring? The surface that the solid figure has
occupied.
Correct!
And what dimensions that we had used in solving
the volume? We used height and radius.

What again is the formula in finding the volume of

a cylinder? The formula in getting the area of a
cylinder is V =π r 2 h
Very good. Now let’s have this figure.

height = 6m
Diameter = 5m

Please go on the board. Show your solution in (show the solution) answer= 37.5
solving the volume of a given cylinder.

Correct! Lets’ now proceed.

3. Fixing Skills

Now, I’ll be grouping you into 4. On the board, I

will write the sample figures of the cylinder on the
columns of each group. Each group will have their
2 representative that will go on the board. If the
representatives needed help, they will raise their
hand for asking help from their other group mates.
The remaining members should stay silence unless (do the activity)
if he/she was asked to talk.

h=3 ; r=5 ; r=2
Answer: 135ft³

r=4 ; h=5.2 ; h=7

h=3 ; r=3 ; r=2

4. Generalization
On getting a volume, what part a of a solid figure
are we going to measure? Ma’am! It is the bulk or the whole
body of a solid figure.
Very good. Why do we still need to familiarize
yourself in getting the volume of a solid figure? Ma’am! it is for us to use or apply
the formula in real life.
Very good. what again is the formula in finding the
area of a cylinder? V =π r 2 h is the formula in finding a
volume of a cylinder, ma’am!

Very good!

C. Application
Direction: solve the given problem.

I have this scented candle.

Its diameter measures 6cm and its height
measures 15cm.
What is the volume of my scented candle?

D. Evaluation
Find the volume of the following.

1. 2.
3. 4.

E. Assignment
Find the volume of a cylinder using the formula
V =π r 2 h

diameter = 8dm
height = 14dm
