Solving Logarithmic Equations: Case 1
Solving Logarithmic Equations: Case 1
Case 1
Given an equation, if we manage to express both sides of it as logarithms of the same base,
then we can simply continue working with the arguments.
Case 2
Given an equation, if we manage to express just one side of it as a logarithm and the other as a
number, then we can continue with applying the logarithm’s definition.
In both of the previously mentioned cases we should not forget to set our restrictions. We need
the arguments of the logarithms to be strictly bigger than 0.
Solution
x+5 0 x −5
Re strictions : x0
2x 0 x0

Example
Solution
x −1 0 x 1
Re trictions : x 1
x +1 0 x −1
ln ( x − 1) + ln ( x + 1) = ln 8 ln ( x − 1)( x + 1) = ln 8 ( x − 1)( x + 1) = 8 x2 −1 = 8

log 6 3x ( x − 1) = 1 61 = 3x ( x − 1)
6 = 3x 2 − 3x 3x 2 − 3x − 6 = 0 x 2 − x − 2 = 0
x = −1, rejected
