(9) Discuss the applicability of Rolle’s Theorem for the function f (x) = 1 − x 3 , on
the interval [−1, 1].
(10) Prove that the equation x3 + x − 1 = 0 has exactly one real root.
(11) Show that between any two roots of ex cos x − 1 = 0, there exists at least one root
of ex sin x − 1 = 0.
(12) Suppose that f (0) = −3 and f ′ (x) ≤ 5 for all values of x. How large can f (2)
possibly be?
(13) If f ′ (x) = 0 for all x in an interval (a, b), then show that f is constant on (a, b).
Hence, prove the identity tan−1 (x) + cot−1 (x) = π2 .
(14) Verify the function f (x) = x3 − x satisfies the hypotheses of the Mean value theo-
rem in [0, 2]. Then, find all the numbers c that satisfies the conclusion of the Mean
Value theorem.
(15) Let f : [0, π] → R be defined by f (0) = 0 and f (x) = x sin x1 − x1 cos x1 for x ̸= 0.
Is f continuous?
(16) Let [.] denote the integer part function and f : [0, ∞)√→ R defined by f (x) =

ther, show that f is discontinuous on {x ∈ [0, ∞) : x = n, where n ̸=

(17) Let f : R → R be continuous function such that f (x) = f (x2 ) for all x ∈ R. Show
that f is constant.
(18) Let f : [0, 1] → R be continuous function such that f (0) = f (1). Show that there
exists x0 ∈ [0, 21 ] such that f (x0 ) = f (x0 + 12 ).
(19) A cross country runner runs continuously a eight kilometers course in 40 minutes
without taking rest. Show that, somewhere along the course, the runner must
have covered a distance of one kilometer in exactly 5 minutes.
(20) Let f : [0, 1] → R be twice differentiable. Suppose that the line segment joining
the points (0, f (0)) and (1, f (1)) intersect the graph of f at a point (a, f (a)) where
0 < a < 1. Show that there exists x0 ∈ [0, 1] such that f ′′ (x0 ) = 0.
(21) Let f : [0, ∞) → R be continuous and f (0) = 0. Suppose that f ′ exists for all
x ∈ (0, ∞) and f ′ is increasing on (0, ∞). Show that the function g(x) = f (x)
