Question:

Calculate the power required per meter of width of stream to force lubricating oil through the gap between
two horizontal flat plates under the following conditions:

Distance between plates, 6 mm

Flow rate of oil per meter of width, 100m 3/h

Viscosity of Oil, 25 cP

Density of Oil, 0.88 g/cm 3

Length of Plates, 3 m

Assume that the plates are very wide in comparison with the distance between them and that end effects are
neglected.

Solution:
Distance between plates = a =6 mm = 0.006 m

Viscosity of Oil = u=25 cP = 25/1000 = 0.025 Kg/ms

Length of Plates =L= 3 m

v́ = 100/(0.006 x 3600) = 4.630 m/s

12(0.025)(4.360)(3)
Pa-Pb ¿
( 0.006)2
= 109000 N/m2

Flow rate =q= 100/3600= 0.02778 m 3 /s

Power =P= 109000 X 0.02778

= 3028 Nm/s

P= 3028 W
