Performance Task 5

1. The document describes a performance task from Emilio Aguinaldo College that investigates students' nervous systems. 2. Students use a ruler and paper clip to test sensitivity on their fingertip, upper arm, and back by touching both ends of a paper clip that is adjusted closer together. They record their results in a table. 3. The objectives are for students to investigate nervous system action, collect and compare data from body parts, and interpret data to form conclusions.

PERFORMANCE TASK NO.5

WHAT A NERVE?

Objectives:
1. The students will investigate the action of their nervous system;
2. The students will collect and compare the data from the three different parts of their
body; and
3. The students will interpret data and form conclusions.

Materials:
 Ruler
 Paper clip

Hypothesis: (educated guess)

Explain which part of your body (fingertip, upper arm, or back) will be most sensitive
and explain why: 5 points

Procedure:
1. Open your paper clip. Spread the ends and use the ruler to measure the distance
between them. Adjust them until they are exactly 4cm apart.
2. Touch both ends of the paper clip to your fingertip. Only a gentle touch is
required. If you feel both ends, type “2” in the table (part of the body)
corresponding to the distance between the paper clip ends. If you only feel one
paper clip end, that means both ends of the paper clip are touching the same
neuron. If this happens, type “3” in the table (part of the body) corresponding to
the distance between the paper clip ends.
3. Repeat this on your upper arm and back. (Note: If it is difficult for you to reach
your back, ask someone for help.)

4. Pull the paper clip ends 1 centimeter closer together. Repeat steps 2 and 3,
bringing the paper clip ends closer each time until they are touching. Use the table

Guide Questions:
1. What patterns did you see in your data? Expound. 5 points

2. Which part of the body was least sensitive? Most sensitive? Why do you think so? 5
points
