Objectives:
1. The students will investigate the action of their nervous system;
2. The students will collect and compare the data from the three different parts of their
body; and
3. The students will interpret data and form conclusions.
Materials:
Ruler
Paper clip
Procedure:
1. Open your paper clip. Spread the ends and use the ruler to measure the distance
between them. Adjust them until they are exactly 4cm apart.
2. Touch both ends of the paper clip to your fingertip. Only a gentle touch is
required. If you feel both ends, type “2” in the table (part of the body)
corresponding to the distance between the paper clip ends. If you only feel one
paper clip end, that means both ends of the paper clip are touching the same
neuron. If this happens, type “3” in the table (part of the body) corresponding to
the distance between the paper clip ends.
3. Repeat this on your upper arm and back. (Note: If it is difficult for you to reach
your back, ask someone for help.)
4. Pull the paper clip ends 1 centimeter closer together. Repeat steps 2 and 3,
bringing the paper clip ends closer each time until they are touching. Use the table
below to record your results. 15 points
