Continuous Assessment Test I: January 2019 Reg. No.

This document contains a continuous assessment test for a 6th semester civil engineering student on the subject of design of steel structures. The test has 3 parts: Part A contains 10 short answer questions worth 2 marks each, Part B contains 5 long answer/design questions worth 13 marks each, and Part C contains 1 long answer/design question worth 15 marks. The test covers topics like riveted and welded joint design, bolted connection design, tension member design, splice design, and connection of steel members to gusset plates. The test is worth a total of 100 marks and has a duration of 3 hours.

Continuous Assessment Test I January 2019 Reg. No.

Programme : B.E. Date : 08/01/2019

Branch : Civil Engineering Time : 09.30am to 12.30pm
Semester : 06 Duration : 3Hrs
Subject code : CE 6603 Maximum : 100 Marks
Subject Name : Design of Steel Structures

PART A (10 x 2 = 20 Marks)

1 Define nominal diameter of rivet?
2 Define Poisson’s Ratio.
3 Formulate the equation for calculating the effective throat thickness of weld.
4 What are the advantages of HSFG?
5 List the types of failures in riveted joints.
6 What are stiffened seat connections?
7 Mention any two disadvantages of welded connections.
8 When gusset plates are used?
9 What is a tension splice?
10 What is a lug angle?

PART B (5 x 13 = 65 Marks)
11 a) Design a single bolted double cover butt joint to connect plates of Fe 410 (13)
grade having thickness 16mm. Use M16 bolts of grade 4.6. Find the
efficiency of the joint.
(or)
b) Find the safe load and efficiency of a double cover butt joint. The main plates (13)
are 12mm thick connected by 18mm diameter bolts at a pitch of 100mm.
Design the cover plate also. What is the percentage reduction in the efficiency
of the joint if the plates are jointed?

12 a) A column ISHB 350 @ 661.2N/m carries an axial compressive factored load (13)
of 1700kN.Design a suitable bolted gusset base. The base rests on M15 grade
concrete pedestal. Use 24mm diameter bolts of grade 4.6 for making the
connections.
(or)
b) A tie member 75mm x 8mm connected to a 10mm thick gusset plate is to (13)
transmit a load of 90kN. Design the fillet weld and calculate the necessary
over lap. Assume site welding.

13 a) Design welded end connections for a tension member consisting of a channel (13)
ISMC 300 to develop full strength of the member. The length of the joint is
limited to 25cm.
(or)
b) A double angle ISA 75 mm X 75 mm X 8 mm back to back welded one side (13)
1
of a 12mm gusset have allowable stress 150MPa. Predict the allowable
tensile load on the members, and weld length and overlap length of gusset
plate.

14 a) Design a tension member to carry a factored force of 340kN. Use 20mm (13)
diameter black bolts and a gusset plate of 8mm thick.
(or)
b) Design a double angle tension member connected on each side of a 12mm (13)
thick gusset plate to carry an axial factored load of 400kN. Use 20mm black
bolts. Assume shop connection.

15 a) Design a splice to connect a 300 X 20mm plate with a 300 x 10mm plate. The (13)
design load is 500kN. Use 20mm bolts fabricated in shop.
(or)
b) A bridge truss diagonal carrier an axial bull of 300kN. Two mild steel flats (13)
250 ISF 10 and ISF 18 of the diagonal are to be joined together. Design a
suitable splice.
PART C (1 x 15 = 15 Marks)

16 a) Two plates 200 x 8 mm of grade 410 are connected by 20 mm bolts using butt joint. (15)
Design the bolted connection to transmit a pull equal to the strength of the plate.
Bolts are of grade 4.6.
(or)
b) A diagonal member of a roof truss carries an axial tension of 300 kN. Design (15)
the section and its connection with a gusset plate and lug angle. Use fy = 250
Mpa and fu = 410 Mpa.
