Cable Sizing CALCULATION

This document summarizes the cable sizing calculations for various 415V incoming power cables supplying different motor control centers (MCCs) as part of a cooling water treatment and distribution system project in Patratu, India. The calculations determine the minimum cable size required based on short circuit withstand capability and cable ampacity for normal load current, with allowances for voltage drop and ambient temperature derating. A key cable sizing calculated was for a double 630 mm2 aluminum cable to supply 693KVA to MCC-1 from PCC2.

1.00.00 PREAMBLE

1.01.00 This document presents the calculations for sizing of 415V major incoming Power Cables being used under the scope of
Ion Exchange Infrastructure Ltd, under an EPC package for Incomers of 415V Motor Control Centre (MCC).

1.02.00 This documentscovers the cable sizing calculation for the following main power cables:

1.02.01 Incomer to MCC-1(Regular power supply bus) from PCC2

1.02.02 Incomer to MCC-1 (Emergency power supply bus) from DG Set

1.02.03 Incomer to MCC-2 from PCC2

1.02.04 Incomer to MCC-3 from PCC1

1.02.05 Incomer to MCC-4 from PCC1

2.00.00 BASIS DESIGN DATA

The cable sizing calculations carried out in this document are based on the following basic design data and criteria.

2.01.00 Ambient Temperature Conditions:

2.01.01 Design Ambient Air Temperature : 50ºC

2.02.00 Type of Cables & Limiting Temperature:

2.02.01 1100 V Power Cables : Stranded Aluminium Conductor, XLPE insulated, screened, PVC
Inner sheathed, Galvanised single round wire armoured and
overall FRLS PVC sheathed

2.02.02 Limiting /Permissible (maximum conductor : 90ºC (for XLPE)

temperature under rated current carrying
capacity conditions)

2.02.03 Limiting /Permissible (maximum conductor : 250ºC (for XLPE)

temperature under short circuit conditions)

2.03.00 Allowable Voltage Drops

2.03.01 Voltage Drop at the motor cable or any other : 3%

electrical equipment cable during the normal
running condition limited to the value

2.03.02 Voltage Drop at the motor terminal during : 10%

the starting condition limited to the value

2.04.00 For 1.1kV grade cables, the current ratings of the cables and applicable derating factors are taken from the technical
data's catalogues of POLYCAB.

3.00.00 SIZING CALCULATIONS

3.00.01 Sizing Calculations of Incomer to MCC-1(Regular Power supply bus ) from PCC2
The 415V power cables referred above are required feeding power from the 415V PCC to 415V MCC.

3.01.00 Based on Short Circuit

3.01.01 The minimum cross section of the cable from short circuit considerations, is given by the formula,

A = Ish √t
k
where, A = Conductor cross section in mm2
t = Fault clearance time in secs
K = A constant depending upon
- Conductor type and its initial & final temperature
- Insulation

3.01.02 The value of K for initial conductor temperature = 90ºC and final conductor temperature = 250ºC, based on
XLPE (AL) cable and that the cable carries its rated current = 94

3.01.03 Ish = Short Circuit Current of the 415V system for a fault on the cable.
Here the maximum fault level at 415V MCC is = 50 kA

3.01.04 Value of 't' is based on the fault clearance time (Breaker tripping time + relay operation time + tolerance).
However, as per requirement, the fault withstand time has been taken as 0.5 secs for all outgoing
distribution feeders to other switchboard.

3.01.05 Substituting the above values in the above formula, we have,

A = 50000 X √0.5 mm2

94
= 376.121 mm2

Minimum selected size = 400 mm2 which corresponds to 53.2 kA for 0.5 secs

3.02.00 Based on cable ampacity

Derating Factor for Ambient [ Note : Since cables would be routed in air,
Air Temperature of 50ºC as = 0.90 derating factors for ground is not applicable.]

300 meters and 3 runs in = (0.06X300)/(3X1000) Ohms
parallel
= 0.006 Ohms

Reactance of 630 mm2 cable = 0.0843 Ohm/Km

[Reference - Attachment - II]

Actual Reactance of Cable of length

300 meters and 3 runs = (0.0843X300)/(3X1000)

= 0.00843 Ohms

The Voltage Drop is = √ 3 X I (R cos f + X sin f )

= 24.254 Volts

= 5.85 % rated voltage, which is

less than allowable 10%

3.04.00 Conclusion

3 nos. 1CX 630 mm2 size (AL) cable for interconnection between PCC 1 & MCC-4 is adequate to satisfy
the short circuit, ampacity and voltage drop requirements.

Notes: 1

1 Temperature co-efficient of CU 0.00393

resistance:
AL 0.00409

2 Derating Factor of Cable:

a) Derating factor for cable spacing:

9 Cables, touching in 1 tray & arranged in 3 rack(Fs)= 0.73

b) Derating factor for variation in air temperature 50°C (Fa) = 0.9

Therefore, overall correction factor: (Fs X Fa) = 0.6570

3 Minimum cable size required 16 mm2 for Al

2.5 mm2 for Cu

4 Formula used to calculate percentage voltage drop = [1.732 x Full load current x (Resistance x Cosø + Reactance x Sinø ) x Length of cable in Metre] / [Supply voltage] x 100

5 Motor starting cu 600 % of motor full load current

6 Allowable voltage drop:

Motor feeders: 3 % during normal running

10 % during starting

7 Cable lengths are assumed based on layout drawing and considering the maximum length of similar type/rating feeders estimated among the no of drives for the same equipment.

8 Cable parameters and derating factors are from Manufacturer's (POLYCAB) catalogue.

9 Cables data are applicable for Copper & Aluminum

Notes:

1 Temperature co-efficient of CU 0.00393

resistance: AL 0.00409

2 Derating Factor of Cable:

a) Derating factor for ambient air temperature at 50°C (F a) = 0.9

b) Derating factor for cable spacing:

9 cables, touching in one tray and arranged in 3 racks (Fs)= 0.73

Therefore, overall correction factor: 0.657

3 Minimum cable size required = 16 mm for Al

2

2.5 mm2 for Cu

4 Formula used to calculate percentage voltage drop = [1.732 x Full load current x (Resistance x Cosø + Reactance x Sinø ) x Length of cable in Metre] / [Supply voltage x 10]

5 Motor starting curre 600 % of full load current [Reference: Design basis report ]
