Relations and Functions.
4 INSTRUCTIONS :
1. Please be online at least 5 mins before the scheduled class / session
commences.
2. Join the meeting / session only through the invite or link been shared by
your teacher.
3. Avoid using your mobile during the session. Keep your mobiles on silent mode
if kept nearby.
4. Follow the session seriously and also the instructions given by the teacher.
5. Mute your camera & microphone as soon as you enter the session and keep
it muted until the teacher asks you to unmute. Everyone will be given chance
to clear their doubts and queries, but it will be after the session.
6. All resources used during the session will be posted under files tab in your
MS team.
7. Students should hang up once session finishes, and the teacher confirms
for exit.
8. Any act of mischief during the session will be taken seriously.
9. Attempt all the polls, quizzes initiated during the session.
10.Parents should avoid interruption in between and allow the child to handle
the session.

A relation R from a non – empty set A to a non-empty set B is a
Definition:
subset of the cartesian product A x B. The subset is derived by describing a
relationship between the first element and the second element of the
ordered pairs in A x B. The second element is called the image of the first
element.
Components
Domain and Range

The set of all first elements of the ordered pairs in a relation R from a set A to
a set B is called the domain of the relation R.

The set of all second elements of the ordered pairs in a relation R from a set
A to a set B is called the range of the relation R.

Note : The whole set B is called the codomain of the Relation R.

 A relation f from a set A to a set B is said to be a function if every element of


set A has one and only one image in set B.
 In other words, a function f is a relation from a non-empty set A to a non-
empty set B such that the domain of f is A and no two distinct ordered pairs
in f have the same first element.
 If f is a function from A to B and (a, b) ∈ f, then f (a) = b, where b is called
the image of a under f and a is called the preimage of b under f
 The function f from A to B is denoted by f: A →B
19 Domain and Range of a function

Let f is a function from 𝑓: 𝑋 → 𝑌 then the set X is called the domain and the set
Y is called the co-domain.
The set consisting of all the images of the element of X under the function f is
called the Range of f . It is denoted by f(x)
