Shear Center
• Let us consider a channel section cantilevered from
a fixed support and is subjected to force P.
• If the force is applied along the once vertical
unsymmetrical axis that passes through the centroid
C of the cross section, the channel will not only
bend downward but it will also twist clockwise as
shown.
Shear Center
• So far we have looked at cross sections that are
symmetrical, but what happens when we will have a
shear force acting through the centroid of the non-
symmetrical cross section.
• It will twist. The reason behind this is the internal shear
flow which causes a net torque in the cross section.
Shear Center
• We usually look at the shear flow in terms of action shear
flow, but it is the reaction shear flow that causes the
twisting.
• So how to overcome it? We can apply the shear force at
an offset such that the torque causes by the shear fore
balance the torque caused by the reaction shear flow.
The position of this offset is what we called our shear
center.
Shear Center
• We can calculate the shear center e by taking the sum of
the moments about O for the forces acting due to q and
equate that to the moment caused by P acting at e.

Shear Center Problem
• If the vertical shear force acting on
the thin-walled channel section in
fig is 2000 N, compute and illustrate
the shear flow and determine the
shear center.
