IV. PROCEDURES

A. Introduction What I need to know?

Upon learning the different parts and mechanisms of the respiratory and circulatory system,
you also discovered that the two systems work tirelessly to deliver essential materials to
different parts of your body. Respiratory and Circulatory system are very hardworking
system and are essential to the human body. However, it can be prone to a lot of diseases
that can cause it to break down that could probably affect the rest of the body as well.

In this module, you will be familiar with some common diseases that can affect the
respiratory and circulatory system as well as the ways on how to prevent acquiring those
diseases to promote a healthy well-being.

As you go through this module, you are expected to:

1. Identify the causes of common diseases related to the respiratory and circulatory
system.
2. Create an information dissemination material on effective way of taking care of the
respiratory and circulatory systems.
3. Suggest ways on how to prevent the circulatory diseases through healthy lifestyle.

v=UZn2pJlZMlU
What is it?
Respiratory system is made up of the organs in the body that help us to breathe.
Just remember that the word respiration is linked to breathing. Circulatory system is
responsible for distributing materials throughout the body. Take note that circulation means
transportation or movement in circles. Both systems are essentially meant for each other.
The common purpose could not be attained without the other system. When you breathe
in, or inhale, the diaphragm muscle contracts. Inhaling moves the diaphragm down and
expands the chest cavity. Simultaneously, the ribs move up and increase the size of the
chest cavity. There is now more space and less air pressure inside the lungs. Air pushes in
from the outside where there is a higher air pressure. It pushes into the lungs where there
is a lower air pressure. When you breathe out, or exhale, the diaphragm muscle relaxes.
The diaphragm and ribs return to their original place. The chest cavity returns to its original
size. There is now less space and greater air pressure inside the lungs. It pushes the air
outside where there is lower air pressure.
Air first enters your lungs and then into the left part of your heart. It is then
driven by your heart into the bloodstream, all the way through your body. The heart pumps
blood, which transports essential nutrients, oxygen, and other chemicals to every cell in
your body. Once it reaches the cells, oxygen processes the nutrients to release energy.
Carbon dioxide is given off during this process. The blood delivers carbon dioxide into the
right portion of your heart, from which it is pumped to the lungs. Carbon dioxide leaves your
body through the lungs when you exhale.

C. Engagement What’s more?

Refer to Module 2 Activity 4
Self-Assessment Test in Taking Care of My Respiratory & Circulatory System

What I can do?

Now that you already gain knowledge about the concepts of respiratory and circulatory
system most especially the ways on how to avoid certain diseases that are related to it,
it’s now time for you to help and promote awareness to your family, friends, and
community for them to sustain a healthy system and their entire well-being. Are you
willing to take your part? Well, let’s make it simple by means of a creative poster or
slogan that will help educate other people about the prevention of circulatory system –
related diseases. You are free to use your own medium in procuring your output. Right
after making your masterpiece, take a picture of it and post it on your own social media
with hash tag #HealthyHeartHealtyLife.
What other enrichment activities can I engage in? (Additional Activities)

To be further enhance your learning about the topic that we had for this session, I have here
few more activities for you to get busy with.

A. MODULAR: Cut out different examples of unhealthy lifestyle from old magazine or
newspapers, and create a collage out of the cut outs in your notebook.
B. ONLINE: Make a 10-minute video performing a simple Zumba dance or exercise. You
may post it on your social media accounts to encourage other people to promote
your healthy lifestyle advocacy.

D. Assimilation What I have learned?

These are some important points to remember:
 Cigarette smoking harms nearly every organ in the body, causing many illnesses
and affecting health in general. The respiratory diseases caused by smoking are
chronic bronchitis, emphysema, asthma, cough, colds, tuberculosis, lung cancer,
and other respiratory infections.
 The blood and the circulatory system can be affected by many diseases. Some of
these diseases are hypertension, heart attack, angina pectoris, rheumatic heart
disease, varicose veins, anemia and leukemia.
 To avoid serious diseases, one should practice healthy lifestyle by maintaining
normal body weight, eating well balanced and low fat diet, performing regular
exercise, keeping the body and environment free, having a regular blood
pressure check – up and living a positive outlook in life.
