I. Answer the following problems/situations. Write necessary solutions and diagrams.

a. Observe the pattern in the first diagram. Following the same pattern, complete the
second diagram.

b. There are 8 people in a party. If everyone at the party shakes hands with everyone
else, how many handshakes would there be?

c. Everyday a postman walks from office to specific destinations to deliver mail.


Today he walked 2 miles west, then 1 mile south, then 3 miles east and 2 miles north, then 1
mile west. How far is the postman from the office?

d. Fill in the next two blanks:

b. 19, 20, 22, 25, 29, ___, ___

e. Three persons, Jhade, Mia and Ameerah are friends. Their surnames are Javier,
Castillo, and Soza, but not necessarily in order. Jhade lives in a red house, Ameerah lives in
a yellow house, and Miss Javier lives in a blue house, and Miss Soza does not live in a red
house. What are the full names of each person?
f. A bus was three stops away from the bus terminal. At the first bus stop, 5
passengers got on and 3 passengers got off. At the second bus stop, 4 passengers got on and
8 passengers got off. At the third bus stop, 2 passengers got on and 12 passengers got off.
When the bus arrived at the terminal, all 75 passengers got off. How many passengers were
on the bus just before it arrived at the first bus stop?

g. Using the numbers from 1 to 9 with no repetition allowed, complete the magic
square below, a magic square is unique in a way that the sum of each line of horizontal, the
sum of each line of vertical and the sum of each of the two middle diagonals are all equal.

h. Using the same procedure do it on a 4 x 4 square using the numbers from 1 to 16.
i. Observe that there are six lines in the magic pointed star. Using the numbers
from 1 to 12 without repetition, such that the sum of each line be equal to 26.

j. There are twelve (12) coins (identical in appearance) and a balance beam. If
exactly one of these coins is fake and heavier than the other eleven, find the fake coin,
using at most three weighing on a balance beam.

k. An Alphametric is a type of number puzzle containing sum (or other


arithmetic operation) in which digits (0 to 9) are replaced by the letters of the
alphabet. Using this method, find which digit is equivalent by each of the letters so
that the addition is correct.

l. In a chess board (8 x 8) place 8 Queens (Q) such that no two are in the same
row, column or diagonal.
m. A snail is at the foot of a flight of ten steps. Every day it will climb up three
steps and climb back down two steps at night. How many days it will take for the snail
to reach the top?

n. Four Bachelor of Secondary Education classmates Aubrey, Elena, Emelita


and Gina, has different majors (English, Filipino, Mathematics and Science). From
the following clues, determine the major of each student. Elena gets home from
school after the Filipino major, but before the science major. Esmelita, who is the last
to get home from school, is not the English major. The science major and Esmelita
leave for school at the same time. The Filipino major lives next door to Gina.

o. Arrange all twelve (12) numbers from 1 to 12 (no repetition) in the box below
without being close to the numbers that follow or precede them. (e.g. The number two
(2) cannot get close to the numbers 1 & 3)
