Reflection: Patterns in Nature

This document discusses different types of symmetries found in patterns in nature: 1. Reflection symmetry (or bilateral symmetry), where objects have equal divisions on both sides of a central axis. Examples given include the Paoay Church, a mug, and butterfly wings. 2. Rotation symmetry, where objects look the same after being rotated around a fixed point by a certain degree. Examples include an electric fan rotated by 3 degrees and a Rubik's Cube rotated by 6 degrees. 3. Translation symmetry, where patterns repeat by being shifted over by a fixed distance. Examples include woven mats, flocks of birds, table covers, and sticky tape patterns. 4. Glide reflection symmetry

MATH IN THE MODERN WORLD: PATTERNS IN NATURE

NAME: KRISTINE C. SANTIAGO BSN 1-D

1. REFLECTION
- sometimes called line or mirror symmetry

Paoay Church,
Paoay, Ilocos Norte,
Bilateral Symmetry
(reflection). The
church possesses
equal division at the
center and both sides
mirror each other.

Mug, Paoay,
Ilocos Norte,
Reflection.
The cup is
being
reflected by a
mirror.

Butterfly, Paoay,
Ilocos Norte,
Bilateral Symmetry
(reflection). The axis
of symmetry lies at
the center of the
Ipil-ipil leaves Paoay,
wings.
Ilocos Norte,
Reflection. The
leaves reflect
2. ROTATION themselves at the
other side.

- fixing one point (the center) and everything rotates by the same amount around
that point.

Rubik’s Cube, Paoay,

Ilocos Norte, Rotation.
The order is 6.
Electric Fan, Paoay,
Ilocos Norte,
Rotation. The order
is 3

Windmill, Bangui,
Ilocos Norte,
Rotation. The order
is 3.

3. TRANSLATION
- moves everything by a certain distance in a certain direction. If a pattern has one
translation symmetry, it automatically has an infinite number of them.
Weaved Door mat Paoay, Ilocos
Norte, Translation. The pattern
translates each other.

Flock of Birds in V shape, Paoay, Ilocos Norte, Translation.

The birds translates each other in a V shape.

Table Cover,
Paoay, Ilocos Norte,
Translation. The
patterns translates
each other.

Sticky Tape Paoay, Ilocos Norte,

Translation. The lines translates each
other.

Paoay Church’s buttresses. Paoay, Ilocos Norte,

Translation. The buttresses or the scrolls at the side
of the church perfectly translates each other.

4. GLIDE REFLECTION
- combines a reflection with a translation along the direction of the mirror line.

A stem of leaves, Paoay, Ilocos

Norte, Reflection. The leaves
first reflect itself to the other
side then translates it.
