provides high class kinds of beans. According to the Statistical Research Department (2021),
the total coffee consumed in the Philippines last 2020 was about 3.3 million of 60 kg bags. This
just shows how great our caffeine consumption is over the years. As attested by Danielle
Gabrish, 2017. Caffeine is used to help cope with students' sleep loss and be able to fulfill
academic duties, students often rely on caffeine (Lazarus, 1993; Lieberman et al., 2015; Thoitis,
1995). This implies that most of the students are relying on the caffeine effect in our body to
fulfill their tasks, especially when the academic stress is increasing. Caffeine helps us through
impacting stress hormones, serotonin, and norepinephrine either through the response to
stimulation of adenosine receptors.
Caffeine has always been part of the students’ life. Students have a rising desire for
caffeinated beverages between examinations, schoolworks, and socializing. Drinking caffeine
has been the most popular way to improve concentration and alertness in our physical and
mental states as well as the brain. Any tolerance that may exist is likely to be influenced by the
biological or behavioral effects of caffeine, as well as the amount of caffeine consumption.
Caffeine has been shown to improve long-term memory, and the study discovered that it can
also improve an individual’s capacity to remember specific memories for least 24 hours after
intake. (Lapac, Jon Nichole, 2018)
However, aside from the good sides of coffee there are known side effects when
students intake too much of it. Drinking coffee is good and it really helps a lot of students to
complete their tasks, but there is a specific amount of caffeine that the students should know,
especially the teenagers. The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests that adolescents ages
12 to 18 should cap daily caffeine intake at 100 mg and it is the equivalent of about one cup of
coffee. Yes, Caffeine doesn't affect performance in learning and memory tasks, but the students
need to know that when taking caffeine in high doses like 400 mg, it can cause insomnia,
nervousness and restlessness, stomach irritation, nausea, increased heart rate and respiration
or worse, death. It is also a stimulant that speeds up the central nervous system, which
stimulates the brain, elevates the mood and postpones fatigue. And too much caffeine can give
you a headache, upset your stomach, make you nervous and jittery and leave you unable to
sleep. Based on the Food and Nutrition Research Institute, Department of Science and
Technology Proportion (%) of consumers, School-aged children drinking coffee or tea 28.74%
(male), 28.24% (female). While in Adolescents 41.59% (male), 35.65% (female). (Gubat, Julia
& Magtibay, E.V.J. & Gironella, Glen Melvin & Tajan, Merlyn & Constantino, M.A.S.2015).
The researchers have been well aware that caffeine consumption has been rampant
nowadays and coffee has been so relevant especially during these times wherein people tend to
work at later hours. These research will show how much caffeine does some grade 12 students
from PHINMA Saint Jude College intakes in a day and how many of them experiences the good
and bad effects of caffeine.
