1. Let the universe be the set U= {1, 2, 3,…, 10}. Let A={1,4,7,10},
B={1,2,3,4,5}, and C={2,4,6,8}. List the elements of each set.

13. The symmetric difference of two sets A and B is the set


A∆ B = ( A ∪ B ) − ( A ∩ B ) . If A={1,2,3} and B={2,3,4,5}, find A∆ B .

14. Prove that X ∩ Y ⊆ X for all sets X and Y.

15. Prove that if A ⊆ C and B ⊆ C , then A ∪ B ⊆ C .

16. If A ∪ B = A ∪ C , must B=C? Explain.


17. Prove that if A ⊆ B and C ⊆ D , then A ∪ C ⊆ B ∪ D and A ∩ C ⊆ B ∩ D .

18. If A ⊆ C and B ⊆ D , prove that A × B ⊆ C × D .

19. Let A={1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10} and


A2 = {5,6,7}, A3 = {4,5,7,9}, A4 = {4,8,10}, A6 = {1,2,3,6,8,10} . Which of the

following are partitions of A,


(a) { A3 , A6 }

(b) { A2 , A3 , A4 }

20. List all the partitions of A={1,2,3}.

21. Let A,B and C be subset of U. Prove that A × ( B ∪ C ) = ( A × B ) ∪ ( A × C ) .
