Gen Math Q1 W2 L4

This document provides an example of a rational function lesson plan. It contains: 1) A description of rational functions as fractions where both the numerator and denominator are polynomials. 2) An example rational function of f(x) = 1/x and its table of values and graph. 3) Another example of the rational function f(x) = -10/(x-3), along with its table of values and graph. 4) Two activities - constructing tables and graphs of additional rational functions, and solving a riddle to identify a rational function based on its properties.

Activity Title: Rational Function and Its Graph
Learning Target(s): Represents a rational function through its: (a) table of values, (b) graph, and
(c) equation
Reference(s): General Mathematics, Oronce, 2016, pp., SILM Gen Math Quarter 1 Module 4

A rational function is a function that is a fraction and has the property that both its numerator
and denominator are polynomials. In other words, R(x) is a rational function if R(x) = p(x) where
q(x)
p(x) and q(x) are both polynomials.

Example 1. f(x) =
x
Note: Since this is rational function we are going to have to be careful with division by zeros. So, we
can see from this equation that we’ll have to avoid x = 0 since that will give division by zero.

Example 2. Given _10_

f(x) =

a. Construct a table of values
b. Plot the points in the Cartesian plane
Solution:

Activity 1. Construct a table of values for the following functions using the integers from -4 to 4.
Then, draw the graph of the rational function.
a. f(x) = 6 b. f(x) = x - 2
x+1
x 2- 1

Activity 2. Riddle
I am a rational function having a vertical asymptote at the lines x = 3 and x = –3, and a
horizontal asymptote at y=1. If my only x intercept is 5, and my y-intercept is - 5 ,what function am I?
