Practice Problems of Unit 1: Flow description – (31.08.

2021)

(the number in the brackets are the exercise problem number in the book by Cengel and Cimbala)

1. (4-1) Consider the following steady, 2-dimensional velocity field V = (0.66+2.1x)i + (-2.7-2.1y)j.
Is there a stagnation point in the flow and if so where? [Hint: A stagnation point is where the velocity
components are zero]

2. (4-33) A bird is flying in a room with a velocity field V = 0.6xi + 0.2tj – 1.4 (m/s). The room is
heated so that the temperature distribution is T = 400-0.4y-0.6z -0.2(5-x)2 °C. Calculate the
temperature change that the bird feels after 10 seconds of flight as it flies through x = 1 m. [Hint:
Use material derivatives to solve]

3. (4-18) A steady incompressible 2D velocity field is given by components u = 0.205+0.97x+0.851y

and v = -0.509+0.953x – 0.97y. Calculate the acceleration field ax and ay, and calculate acceleration
at (2,1.5). [Hint: Use material derivatives to solve]

4. (4-34) The velocity field of a flow is described by V = 4xi+(5y+3)j+3t2k. What is the pathline of
a particle at (1,2,4) after t = 1s.

5. (4-35) Consider the following steady, incompressible, 2D velocity field V = (4.35+0.656x)i+(-

1.22-0.656y)j. Generate general expression for streamlines and draw several streamlines in upper-
right quadrant from x = 0 to 5 and y = 0 to 6. [Hint: Need to keep solving for several values of
constant C and plot the final expressions in MS-Excel]

6. (4-82) A steady 3D flow is given by V = (0.657+1.73x+0.948y+az)i + (2.61+cx+1.91y+bz)j+(-

2.73-3.66y-3.64z)k. Find the expression for the vorticity vector. Calculate constants a,b,c such
that flow is irrotational. [Hint: Find the vorticity vector and then equate each of its components to
zero]

7. (9-21) Consider the steady 3D flow V = (axy2-b)i-2cy3j+dxyk where a, b, c, d are constants. Under
what values of the constants is the flow incompressible?

8. (9-24) Consider a sink flow described in angular r-θ coordinates by components ur = C/2πr and uθ
= Γ/2πr, where C and Γ are constants. Verify that the flow satisfies incompressible continuity
equation in r-θ coordinate system.

9. (9-54) A steady incompressible 2D flow has the stream function ψ = ax2+bxy+cy2 where a, b, c
are constants. Obtain the velocity components u and v. Verify that flow field satisfies the
incompressible continuity equation.

10. (10-56) Consider a steady 2D incompressible irrotational flow specified by the velocity potential
function φ = 3(x2-y2) + 3xy - 2x - 5y + 2. (a) Calculate velocity components u and v, (b) Verify
that the flow is irrotational and (c) Generate an expression for the stream function [Hint: In case
unable to compare terms from the result of two integrations to find a single expression for ψ, you
may leave it at that]
