Vertical Distribution of Base Shear

This document describes the vertical distribution of base shear for a 4-story building in the Philippines. It provides the weight and height of each floor. The total base shear is calculated as 432.24 kN. Using the equation shown, the portion of the base shear distributed to each floor is calculated based on the floor weight and height. The distributed base shear is 8.086 kN for the top floor and 141.385 kN for the bottom three floors.

Computation:

1. Determine 𝐹𝑡
2. Find 𝐹𝑥 at each level

Calculations and Discussions:

Note: The value of 𝑭𝒕 need not exceed 𝟎. 𝟐𝟓𝑽 and may be considered zero when
𝑻 is 𝟎. 𝟕𝒔 or less. The remaining portion of the base shear shall be
distributed over the height of the structure, including level 𝒏 according to the
equation below

1. Determine 𝑭𝒕

This is the concentrated force applied at the top (roof) of the building. It is determined
as follows:

First, check that 𝐹𝑡 is not zero or zero.

𝑇 = 0.4713 sec. < 0.7 𝑠𝑒𝑐. therefore 𝐹𝑡 is zero

2. Find 𝑭𝒙 at each level

The vertical distribution of seismic forces is determined from the equation

(𝑉 − 𝐹𝑡 )(𝑤𝑥 ℎ𝑥 )
𝐹𝑥 =
∑𝑛𝑖=1 𝑤𝑖 ℎ𝑖
where:

(𝑉 − 𝐹𝑡 ) = (432.24 − 0)
= 432.24 𝐾𝑁

Since there are ten levels 𝑛 = 5.Therefore,

(𝑉− 𝐹𝑡 )(𝑤𝑥 ℎ𝑥 )
𝐹𝑥 = ∑5𝑖=1 𝑤𝑖 ℎ𝑖

(432.24)(𝑤𝑥 ℎ𝑥 )
𝐹𝑥 = ∑𝑛
𝑖=1 𝑤𝑖 ℎ𝑖

The equation is solved in the table below;
