Learning Activity Sheet Mathematics 8 Second Quarter - Week 6

This document is a learning activity sheet for 8th grade mathematics students. It contains definitions and examples for conditional statements including the inverse, converse, and contrapositive. There are two activities for students to practice determining these. Activity 1 has students identify the hypothesis and conclusion of conditional statements and rewrite them in if-then form. Activity 2 has students write the converse, inverse, and contrapositive of given statements and match notations to their definitions. The sheet was prepared by a teacher and checked by a master teacher, and provides a rubric for scoring student work.

Mathematics 8
Second Quarter – Week 6

Name: _____________________________ Date: ________________________

Grade & Section: _______________________ Teacher: __________________________

MELC No: 31
MELC: Determines the inverse, converse, and contrapositive of an if-then
statement.

DEFINITION OF TERMS:
Conditional statements- these are formed by joining 2 statements with the words
if and then.
1.IF-then: If-Statement is the hypothesis and then- statement is the conclusion.
: If P then Q or 𝑃 → 𝑄
2. CONVERSE: Exchange the hypothesis and the conclusion of the conditional
statement.
: If Q then P or 𝑄 → 𝑃
3. INVERSE: NEGATE both the hypothesis and conclusion of the conditional
statement.
: If NOT P then NOT Q or ~𝑃 → ~𝑄
4. CONTRAPOSITIVE: EXCHANGE and NEGATING both the Hypothesis and the
conclusion of the conditional
: If NOT Q then NOT P or ~𝑄 → ~𝑃

Example1: All Whole numbers are integers

1.IF-then: If it is a whole number, then it is an integer.
2. CONVERSE: If it is an integer, then it is a whole number.
3. INVERSE: If it is not a whole number then it is not an integer.
4. CONTRAPOSITIVE: If it is not an integer then it is not a whole number.

Example 2: An angle measures 60º is an acute angle.

1.IF-then: If an angle measure 60 º, then it is an acute angle.
2. CONVERSE: If it is an acute angle, then it measures 60º.
3. INVERSE: If an angle is not 60º then it is not an acute angle.
4. CONTRAPOSITIVE: If it is not an acute angle then an angle is not 60º.
ACTIVITY 1:
A. Underline the hypothesis and circle the conclusion of each conditional
statement.
1. If I am not tired, then I can’t sleep
2. If 4x – 6 =26, then x= 8
3. A=0 or b =0 implies ab =0
4. <1 is a right angle only if m<1 =90º
5. I will try if you will try.

B. Rewrite the conditional statements in IF-Then form

1. 9x+5 = 23, because x= 2

2. Today is Friday and tomorrow is weekend.

3. You are in a band, and you play the drums.

4. Two right angles are supplementary angles.

5. Only people who are registered are allowed to vote.

ACTIVITY 2: IDENTIFY ME!

Write the converse, inverse, and contrapositive for each of the following statements.
1. a. “If I win, then you don’t lose”
Converse: __________________________________________________________
Inverse: ___________________________________________________________
Contrapositive: ____________________________________________________

b. “If two segments are congruent, then they have the same length”
Converse: _________________________________________________________
Inverse: ___________________________________________________________
Contrapositive: ____________________________________________________

2. Match the notation of the following statements below.

Draw a line to match them.

Contrapositive If not p then not q

Inverse If not q, then not p

Converse If p, then q

If- then If q, then p

Rubric for Scoring: (20pts.)
Activity 1: One (1) point for every correct answer
Activity 2: One (1) point for every correct statement and match up of notations.
