Indahag National High School: Lesson Plan in Practical Research 2

This lesson plan is for a Practical Research 2 class at Indahag National High School. The objectives are for students to identify population and sample, differentiate sampling procedures, and use appropriate samples to gain information about a population. The lesson will review population and sampling concepts through questions, introduce sampling methods through a scenario and activity, analyze sampling methods, and apply their understanding through matching situations to procedures. Students will complete a summative assessment to demonstrate their mastery of identifying populations, samples, and appropriate sampling procedures.

LESSON PLAN IN PRACTICAL RESEARCH 2

DATE: June 20, 2017

I. Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the learner is able to:
a. identify population and sample,
b. differentiate different sampling procedures,
c. use appropriate samples to gain information about a population.

A. Content Standard:
The learner demonstrates understanding of:
1. quantitative research designs;
2. description of sample;
3. instrument development;
4. description of intervention (if applicable);
5. data collection and analysis procedures such as survey, interview, and observation;
6. guidelines in writing research methodology

B. Performance Standard: The learner is able to describe adequately quantitative research

designs, sample, instrument used, intervention (if applicable), data collection, and
analysis procedures.

C. Learning Competency: The learner describes sampling procedure and the sample.

II. Subject Matter:

Topic : Understanding Data and Ways to Systematically Collect Data
Materials : worksheets, survey questionnaire
Reference : Curriculum Guide – Practical Research 2, page 3 (CS_RS12-IIa-c-2)
III. Procedure:

A. Drill/Review:
Review on population and sample. Teacher will use the questions below to guide
them in recalling the concepts:
1. What is the difference between sample and population?
2. Why do we use a sample?
3. What are the advantages and disadvantages of a sample?
B. Motivation:
The teacher will introduce the concepts and skills with a scenario prompting
whole class discussion.
Scenario: "Imagine if we wanted to find out ice cream flavor preference of all high school
students in INHS".
Ask the following questions: can we use the whole population to gather data?
What different methods would you use to select a sample that will truly represent the whole
population?

C. Activity:
Teacher can introduce some of the most common sample selection methods while
having discussions with the students.
The students will complete an activity, "The Survey Says", with teacher guidance.
During this activity the students will be working in small groups, (3-4 students per group)
collecting data and drawing conclusions from the data. Students will use assigned method for
collecting data to estimate the average height of grade 11 girls in the school. They will follow all
instructions given on the worksheet while teacher circulates around the classroom assisting,
guiding, and monitoring students' progress and understanding.
D. Analysis:
Ask the following questions:
What sampling method would be best for this situation?
Why would you select that method?
E. Abstraction:
Discussion of answers to the questions given.
F. Application:
In this activity students will create a two-column chart in their notebook. They
will label the left side SITUATION and the right side SAMPLING PROCEDURE. 6 scenarios
will be given for each student to analyze. Students determine which sampling procedure is best
for that scenario. They must discuss their reasoning with their partner and then share their
reasoning during a whole class discussion.
IV. Evaluation:
Teacher will highlight key elements of the lesson. Students will then be asked to
reflect on the following:
3 Things I learned today
2 Things I found interesting
1 Question I still have
V. Homework/Assignment:
At the conclusion on the lesson, students will independently complete a summative
assessment requiring them to identify populations and samples in given scenarios, as well as
identifying which scenario's sampling procedure This assessment will measure students' mastery
of the learning objectives.
