MEDIA AND INFORMATION LITERACY LESSON

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
1. Differentiate indigenous media from other sources of information;
2. Compare potential sources of media and information; and
3. Contrast indigenous media to the more common source of information
such as library, internet, etc.

II. SUBJECT MATTER


Topic : Media and Information Sources
References : Media Information Literacy Curriculum Guide by DepEd,
Module and Internet
Materials : PowerPoint presentation, laptop

III. PROCEDURES
A. Preparatory Activities
a. Daily Routine
● Prayer
● Greetings
● Checking of Attendance
b. Drill/ Review
The teacher will ask the students to state and discuss briefly about
what they have learned in information literacy and information
literacy skills.
B. Development Activities
a. Motivational/ Introduction
The teacher will ask the students to guess the answer by solving
the following riddles. “WHAT AM I?”
➢ What building has the most stories?
Library
➢ I’m where yesterday follows today and tomorrow is in the
middle. What am I?
Dictionary
➢ What has words, but never speaks?
A Book
➢ When you do not know what I am, then I am something. But
when you know what I am then I am nothing. What am I?

b. Presentation / Discussion
The teacher will discuss the Media and Information Sources, Types
of Information Sources

Sources of Media and Information


Three types of sources of Information
● Primary sources are original, uninterpreted or “first hand”
materials on which other research studies are based.
● Secondary sources of information is one that was created
by someone who didn’t have first-hand experience or did
not participate in the events or conditions being researched.
● Tertiary sources provided an overview of what the topic
includes, its basic terminology, and often references for
further reading.

Media and Information Resources

● Indigenous Media is a variety of media expression


conceptualized, produced, and circulated by indigenous
people worldwide as a vehicle of communication.

Examples of Indigenous Media


a. Riddle is usually a test of wit which requires the
audience to see the object literally described and the
object referred to.
b. Proverb makes a statement about what it describes.
They provide people with lessons that allow them to
cope with the problems of living.
c. Tanaga is a short poem full of metaphors in the sense
that its single metaphor establishes an analogy
between human experience and an aspect of man’s
environment.
d. Folk Epics also known as a long narrative based on
tradition, beliefs, customs, ideals and social values.
e. Duplo was first introduced in the Pre-Spanish period
in connection with morning rituals and later with
harvest celebration.
f. Karagatan are generally well-trained players, the
karagatan players are merely guests who are called
upon to extemporize verses.
g. Panunuluyan was usually performed on Christmas
Eve, before the midnight mass. An elaborate affair,
the panunuluyan is generally organized by a town
school or local parish.
h. Tibag is one the most famous indigenous media
during the Spanish era. The word tibag comes from
the word of excavating the three mounds during the
search of the cross.
i. Pasyon was a very popular Lenten activity which was
undertaken in order to “purify one’s soul”.
j. Cenaculo is a theatrical presentation of the passion
and death of Jesus Christ and may be said to the
pasyon on stage.
k. Awit the English equivalent of the awit is the metrical
romance. It usually deals with love between a Moro
princess and a Christian warrior, or a Christian
princess and a Moro prince.
l. Carillo brought to the Philippines by a Spaniard, the
Carillo, like its counterpart in China and Japan,
consists of manipulating figures by skillful hand.
m. Moro-Moro and Comedia are also theatrical
presentations intended to convert .Many
author-priests used plays to convert natives to
Christianity.

● Library is a building or room where literary, musical, artistic,


or reference materials (such as books, manuscripts,
recordings, or films) are kept for use but not for sale.
● Internet is a global computer network providing a variety of
information and communication facilities, consisting of
interconnected networks using standardized communication
protocols.

c. Practice Exercise
Directions: From the given words and phrases in the box, choose
only five considered primary sources.

d. Generalization
The essential questions to ask when seeking for information are "What
type of information is required?" and "Where may these pieces of
information be found?" You must be aware of the numerous
information sources available in order to gather timely, relevant, and
high-quality information for your study or research. Finding credible
sources of information is a skill that can help you discover and improve
more skills in 21st-century learning.
