Basic Skills of Basketball
1) Shooting – is the act of making an attempt to throw the ball to the basket to earn
points.

Types of Shooting
 Free throw- is the privilege given to a player to serve one or two points by
unhindered throw for a goal from within the free throw circle and behind
the free throw line. Proper stance for the free throw is feet comfortably
apart. The shooting hand must be in an “L” form. It is important to
remember to keep the eyes on the target or the goal. Slightly bend the

knees to give additional power in shooting the ball. Fully extend the arms
to release the ball and do a follow through movement.
 Set Shot - Players usually use this kind of shot when they are close to the
basket. Place the ball in front of you. Do a springing movement upward
while aiming for the basket. Then as you release the ball, fully extend your
arms with a follow through movement as you straighten your legs with
only the tip of your toes touching the ground.
 Jump shot- is quite similar to the set shot. It differs in a way the ball is
release. In jump shot the ball is to be released at the top of the vertical
jump.
 Lay-up- is simply a short range shot that usually hits the board. It is being
performed by running towards the basket. The right handed shooter must
do a lift or jump on his right foot and vice versa for those who will be
shooting using their left hand. Aim the board in shooting a lay-up but do
not hit it too hard; make the ball hit the board gently so it would gradually
bounce towards the basket.

2) Dribbling – is the act of continuously bouncing the ball to the floor by one hand or
both hands alternately in moving to a certain point of the court.

Five types of Dribbling;

1. Side dribble-this is one way of dribbling the ball either on the right or left side of
the body.
2. Crossover dribble-Crossover dribbling can be done by dribbling the ball by one
hand then bouncing it in front to change the dribbling hand to the other side.
3. Between the leg-Dribbling between the legs is one of the best ways to protect
the ball from a steal of the opponent. Dribble the ball from right to left hand and
let the ball passes between the legs.
4. Behind the back Dribble-the ball with your left then let it pass behind your back
and have it bounce so it can move towards the right hand.
5. Turn Around Dribble-For the turn-around dribbling, change direction by turning
around, bounce the ball towards the opposite hand and then continue dribbling
the ball moving forward

3) Rebounding – the act of successfully gaining the positions of the ball after a missed
shot or missed free throw.

4) Passing – is the act of

transferring the ball positions to a teammate using hand snap.

 KINDS OF PASSING:
 CHEST PASS- this is the most basic pass, used when there is no opponent between
you and the receiver. It is used for quick, clean passing over short distance.
Hold the ball near the chest, right or left foot forward, extend the arms and move the
body towards the direction of the pass. When the arms are in the full stretch, snap
the wrist forward and do a follow through movement.
 BOUNCE PASS-the bounce pass should travel from your waist to the receiver’s
waist. The ball should bounce about 2/3 of the way to the receiver. You should follow
through as in chest pass with your thumbs down. You can make the pass with one or
both hands.
Hold the ball at the chest level and right foot or left foot forward. The pass must be
aiming the ground to make a bounce which must be 2/3 at the distance of the
receiver so that it may bounce just on the waist level of the receiver. Always
remember that arms must be in a full arm extension. Do a follow through movement
using the power of the wrist.
 OVERHEAD PASS- it is used for passing over an opponent’s head and especially
useful for a taller player to use when passing over a smaller opponent. Remember to
watch for, and aim at your receiver signal.
Hold the ball above the head and elbows must be spread. Step one foot forward
pointing to the direction of the pass, move the arms forward and snap the wrist with
power then release the ball towards the receiver.
 BASEBALL PASS- is most often used to advance the ball up the floor. This pass is
designed for distance, speed and initiating fast breaks.
Hold the ball with the throwing hand, then place it near the back of the ear and the
free hand is aiming towards the position of the receiver. Slightly leaned the body
backward and shift forward as it release the ball to do a follow through movement
with the throwing hand fully extended.
