INTRODUCTION
Basketball is a fast-paced game that requires the knowledge and instinct to perform quickly and
properly. The sport of basketball requires five basic skills. While some players might be more experienced with
some skills than others, it is best to have at least some ability in all five areas.
We will however in this discussion, focus only into three important skills namely: shooting, passing
and dribbling. Learning these basic skills will in a way will help you maintain or improve your fitness level.
CONTENT
Jump shot is most frequently used for mid to long-range shots, including shooting beyond the
arc.
Hook shot is when the shot is made while your body is not directly facing the basket.
Bank shot is when any shot made where the ball hits the backboard before heading into the net A
free throw is a shot attempt given to a player that was fouled and it is taken on the free throw line.
The player must stay behind the free throw line when taking the shot..
Layup is a shot made from short range by a player moving towards the basket. Usually utilising
the backboard if he approaches the hoop from an angle. This is also one of the most basic and
common way of scoring a basket in the game.
Dunk is usually the most spectacular shot and is one of the toughest feats in basketball.
Passing
Passing is a skill that when mastered can help you become a complete basketball
player. It is a great manifestation of teamwork in a basketball team. Basketball is a
team sport that involves finding a teammate who is open for a shot. The ability to
pass the ball to this player can make the difference between scoring and not
scoring.
Bounce Pass - most effective when it begins with a shot fake or pass
fake up high.
Chest pass - most efficient and effective pass for ball movement.
Overhead pass - to pass over a defender whose hands are down.
One-hand push pass -It works best when the passer fakes high and
then passes low.
