Lesson 1
Communication Processes, Principles, and Ethics

What to achieve?
At the end of the lesson, you should be able to:
 describe the principles and process of communication and the ethical considerations in
communication;
 elucidate how communication skills help resolve problems, better understand new
concepts, and aid in your profession; and
 frame a slogan how the knowledge of the communication process aids people in
communicating effectively.

What to ponder?
1. Why do people communicate?
2. What might happen to the world if communication does not exist?
3. Why do miscommunications and misunderstandings happen?

What to learn?
Communication
 The process of meaning-making through a medium.
 From the Latin word “communicare” which means to share or make ideas common.

Components of the Communication Process:

1. Source – sender (author, public speaker, etc.)
2. Message – reason for the interaction, meaning being shared
3. Channel – means by which a message is conveyed (phone, letter, ect.)
4. Receiver – receives the message
5. Feedback – essential to confirm the recipient’s understanding
6. Environment – place, feeling, mood, mind set, & condition of both speaker and receiver
7. Context – common or shared understanding through the environmental signals (expectation
of sender & receiver)
8. Interference – barrier, block to effective communication
Kinds of Interference:
1. Psychological barriers – thoughts that hamper the message to be interpreted
correctly
2. Physical barriers – competing stimulus, weather & climate, health & ignorance of the
medium
3. Linguistic and cultural barriers – language, cultural environment
4. Mechanical barriers – raised by channels employed for communication
(cellphones, laptops, and other gadgets used in communication)
5. Physiological barriers – body & health problems

9 Principles of Effective Communication

Michael Osborn (2009) claims that communication must meet certain standards for effective
communication to take place:
1. Clarity
• speeches are understandable
• What are forbidden:
- fuzzy language - euphemism

6
- cliché expressions - jargons
- doublespeak language
2. Concreteness
• messages must be supported by facts (research data, statistics or figures)
• Abstract ideas must be avoided
3. Courtesy
• Being polite in terms of approach and manner of addressing an individual
4. Correctness
• Grammar
• Language use
5. Consideration
• Background of the audience
6. Creativity
• the ability to craft interesting messages in terms of sentences structure and word choice
7. Conciseness
• Simplicity & directness
• Avoid lengthy expressions and words
• 9 Principles of Effective Communication
8. Cultural Sensitivity
• Empowering diverse cultures, lifestyles, and races
• Gender equality
• cultural sensitivity
9. Captivating
• Make message interesting to command more attention and better responses

Ethical Considerations in Communication

Ethics is a branch of philosophy that focuses on issues of right and wrong in human affairs.
Ethical Communicators:
1. Respect audience.
2. Consider the result of communication.
3. Value truth.
4. Use information correctly.
5. Do not falsify information.
