A Detailed Lesson Plan in Science Q3

The lesson plan aims to teach students how heat is transferred through solid materials. Students will observe heat transfer through activities using materials like crayons, spoons, and mugs. They will work in groups to melt crayons on a spoon over a candle flame, then feel the temperature of a spoon in hot water to understand how heat moves from hot to cold objects through direct contact. The lesson emphasizes that heat travels through solids by conduction, with good conductors allowing faster transfer than insulators. Students will learn to describe heat transfer and identify conduction.

Teacher’s Activity Pupil’s Activity

A. Preliminary Activities

1. Greetings
Good morning class! All: Good morning Teacher Leni! Good morning
classmates! It’s nice to see you again!
2. Review
“Pull or Push”
The teacher will distribute strips of paper to the (The pupils will put the strip of paper they get to
pupils with names of different materials that its right column in the chart provided.)
either attracts or repel to magnet and will let
them complete the following chart:

A. Materials that attract to B. Materials that repel to

magnet magnet

The materials given are the following: (The metal cauldron will be placed at column A)
* metal cauldron
*plastic spoon (The plastic spoon will be placed at column B)
*plastic handle of a pot (The plastic handle of a pot will be placed at
column B)
*pot holder (The pot holder will be placed at column B
*wooden ladle (The wooden ladle will be placed at column B)
*ceramic mug (The ceramic mug will be placed at column B)
(The metal fork will be placed at Column A)

B. Developmental Activities

1. Engagement

A. The teacher will ask the following questions:

1. Do you help your mother in the kitchen? (The pupils answer may vary)
How?
2. Why do some objects get hot easily? (The pupils answer may vary and influenced by
different background knowledge.)

B. Show a picture of cooking utensils (The pupils will observed the pictures being
Ask: presented)
1. Why do cooking utensils have handles - So that the heat will not get through your
made of wood or plastic? hands easily while using it with heat.
2. Why are cooking utensils made of - So that it will heat up easily and can cook food
metals? faster.
3. How do you think heat transferred (Pupils answer may vary)
from one object to another?
Say: The correct answer for that is what we will
know after performing this activity

2. Exploration

1. Setting of Standards

The teacher will set up the classroom in a way (The pupils will listen to the following
that pupils can move and work freely. instructions given by the teacher)

2. Group Activity

a. The teacher will have three (3) groups for the a. The pupils will group themselves into three.
activity.

b. The teacher will give the following materials b. The pupils will use the given materials.
to be utilized in the activity: pulverized crayon,
metal spoon, candles, matchsticks.

c. The teacher will give the task to follow for c. The pupils will listen to and follow the task
each group to work on. given by the teacher.

Task:
1. The teacher will let the pupils light the
candle with a matchstick / lighter.

2. Get a pulverized crayon and put it to the

metal spoon.

3. The teacher will let the pupils hold the

metal spoon and place it to the tip of the flame
of the candle.

4. The teacher will let each group to work on

with the activity and observe what will happen.

5. The teacher will give each group at least

1 whole sheet of manila paper where they can
write their observations and answer to the
different guide questions. The questions are as
follows:

1. What happened to the pulverized crayons

when it was exposed to heat?
2. Why do you think it melted?
3. If we continue to expose the spoon to the
flame, what do you think will happen to its
handle?
3. What could be inferred from this activity?

3. Explanation
a. Analysis of the result of the activity
The teacher will let each group to have a (The three groups will present their work)
reporting on their observations based on the
guide questions:

1. What happened to the pulverized crayons - The crayons melted.

when it was exposed to heat?
2. Why do you think it melted? - The heat from the flame travelled to the
spoon which caused crayons on it to
melt.
3. If we continue to expose the spoon to the
flame, what do you think will happen to its - It will also be heated.
handle?
3. What could be inferred from this activity? - Heat moves from hot object to cold
object.

b. Presentation
Say: As the spoon is heated, the crayons on top (The pupils will listen to the concepts and new
of it melt. This shows that the heat coming from topic being presented)
the candle is transferred from the spoon to the
crayons. This is called the heat transfer through
solid mazterials which is the CONDUCTION.

c. Mastery of Concepts
Say: Heat is a form of energy associated with (The pupils will listen to the facts, concepts and
motion of particles. It transfers between bodies wisdom given during the discussion)
of different temperature. The transfer of heat
through solid materials is called Conduction.

Conduction is the heat transfer through an

object or substance or from a substance to
another by direct contact.

There are materials that allow heat to flow

through easily. We call them conductors. Metals
are good conductors. That’s why we use them
as cooking utensils because heat moves fast
though the metal pan to the food. There are
materials through which heat passes slowly or
not at all. We call these insulators. Some
insulators are wood, plastic and ceramic. And
most of them were used as cooking utensils’
handle.

4. Elaboration/ Application

a. The teacher will let the learners perform a. The pupils will perform the activity given and
another activity as an application of the will retain the same grouping used in the
concepts learned. previous activity.

b. The teacher will give the following materials b. The pupils will use the given materials.
to be utilized in the activity: mug, metal spoon,
hot water from a heater or dispenser.

c. The teacher will give the task to follow for c. The pupils will listen to and follow the task
each group to work on. given by the teacher.

Task:
1. The teacher will let the pupils fill a mug
with hot water.

2. The teacher will let them place a metal

spoon into the coffee mug.

3. The teacher will let them wait for five

minutes and will let them carefully feel the
exposed end of the spoon.

4. The teacher will let the learners slightly

touch the outside surface of the mug.

5. The teacher will let each group to work on

with the activity and observe what will happen.

6. The teacher will give each group at least

1 whole sheet of manila paper where they can
write their observations and answer to the
different guide questions. The questions are as
follows:

1. What happened to the exposed end of the

spoon after five minutes?

2. What did you notice about the outside

surface of the mug when you touched it? Why?

3. Suggest ways to reduce the effect of heat on

the spoon so that we can avoid getting hurt
when we lift it out of the hot mug.

d. The teacher will check the work of each d. The pupils will pass their work after
group after they have finished answering the answering the questions given and find out
questions by Consultation and Reveal Method. whether it is correct or not.

5. Generalization

Ask:
1. What have you learned? (Pupils answer may vary)
2. How is heat transferred from one object - The heat energy is transferred from
to another? hotter object to cooler object making it
hot.
3. How does heat travel by conduction? - Heat travels by conduction through a
direct contact.

IV. Evaluation

Direction: Encircle the letter of the correct answer.

1. What is the direction of heat transfer?

a. from hot to cold c. from cold to hot
b. from bottom to top d. from side to side
2. How is heat transferred in solid materials?
a. through convection c. through conduction
b. through radiation ` d. through vacuum
3. Which is good conductor?
a. metal c. ceramic
b. wood d. plastic
4. Which is good insulator?
a. metal spoon c. plastic ruler
b. gold ring d. metal pan

For item number 5 answer the following question briefly:

* Why do we need to use a pot holder when we are removing hot casseroles or any hot
cooking wares out of the stoves?
V. Assignment

Give at least 5 materials you can see at home that is a good conductor of heat.
