Ecd Project Lab: Synopsis

This document provides a synopsis for a project to create a motion detecting door latch circuit. The circuit will use a PIR motion sensor along with timers, gates, flip-flops, and a shift register to control a stepper motor that opens the door upon detecting motion. Components include ICs like NE555, 7400, 74LS194, and transistors. The objective is to apply digital logic skills and create a useful real-life project. A block diagram outlines the sensor, control, and driver units and timelines provide project dates from March to May. Expected results are the door unlocking upon motion detection and successful circuit operation.

DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRONICS AND COMMUNICATION ENGINEERING

MANIPAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

Manipal Academy of Higher Education
MANIPAL – 576104, KARNATAKA, INDIA
1. AIM: To create a circuit which upon detection of motion opens the door
2. ICs and component required:

 NE555 (2 Timer ICs)

 7400 (Quad Two input NAND Gate)
 74LS194 (4-bit bidirectional universal shift register)
 7432 (Quad Two input OR Gate)
 Quad two input positive NOR Gate
 7404 (HEX Inverter)
 7474 (Dual Positive Edge Trigger D Flip-Flop)
 BC547 (General Purpose silicon NPN Transistor)
 BD139 (medium power NPN Silicon Transistor)
 1N4007 (Rectifier Diode)
 HC-SR501( PIR Motion Detection Sensor)
 Resistors and capacitors
 5v power supply

3. OBJECTIVE

 To apply our knowledge about digital logic into practice.

 To get familiarized with different ICs, gates, flip-flops, multivibrator, etc.
 To make a project that can be useful in real life.

4. BLOCK DIAGRAM/ METHODOLOGY

PIR CONTROL DRIVER

SENSOR UNIT UNIT

STEPPER
MOTOR
PIR SENSOR

The PIR sensor detects motion when an object enters within a proximity of 3-7 Meters
and sends a high signal(3.3V) as output.

CONTROL UNIT

TIMER
For generating accurate time delay, a 555 timer circuit is used. The basic operation of
timer IC 555 can be explained by its use as monostable circuits. It is basically
monolithic timer circuit which can be used in many applications.

74LS194 (4-bit bidirectional universal shift register)

The shift registers are used to shift the registers either to the left or to the right
depending upon its input from the 555 timer and other gates.

7474 (Dual Positive Edge Trigger D Flip-Flop)

The D type flip flop is used in triggered mode for providing mode control inputs for
the shift register. The mode control is used for changing the direction of the shift
register thus changing the direction of the stepper motor.

DRIVER UNIT

The driver circuit uses four Darlington pair transistors to increase the current carrying
capability for operating the stepper motor.

STEPPER MOTOR

The stepper motor is used to mechanical lock and unlock the door. It is controlled by the
driver unit.

16/3/2022 to Preparation of synopsis

22/3/2022
o Simulation
1/4/2022
o Purchasing the components
25/4/2022 to o Physical implementation
o Final presentation
15/5/2022

7. EXPECTED RESULTS

 After the successful completion of the project, we can get the door unlocked as
soon as motion is detected.
 Circuit 1 should successfully detect motion and set the direction of rotation of the
stepper motor.
 Circuit 2 should successfully be able to increase the current as required by the
stepper motor.
