Experiment Number - 6: Aim of The Experiment

This experiment aimed to find the numerical aperture of an optical fiber by measuring the acceptance angle. Equipment used included a laser, fiber stand, concentrator, optical fiber, and detector. Observations at different fiber-detector distances were recorded. Calculations determined the fiber's numerical aperture was 0.4472 and acceptance angle was 26.56 degrees. Sources of error and conclusions were provided. The student learned that high numerical aperture allows efficient light coupling but increases dispersion, while low aperture reduces dispersion.

EXPERIMENT NUMBER -6

NAME OF STUDENT: HARSHAD AGARWAL

STUDENT UID: 20BCS3335
CLASS AND GROUP: CSE 28 /B
SEMESTER : 2
SUBJECT: QUANTUM AND SEMICONDUCTOR PHYSICS

AIM OF THE EXPERIMENT: The objective of this lab activity is

finding the numerical aperture of a given optical fiber and hence to
find its acceptance angle.

Requirements:
S.No. Equipment Quantities in No.
1 Emmiter/Laser 1
2 Fiber stand 1
3 Concentrator 1
4 Optical fiber 1
5 Detector 1
6 Output unit 1

Diagram:
OBSERVATIONS AND CALCULATIONS:
One pitch scale division (n) = 0.5 mm
Number of divisions on head scale (m) = 100 Least
count (L.C) =n/m = 0.01 mm

As per the experiment the observations are as given below:

S.No. Distance X (in mm) Detector reading, I(µA)
1 8 0.10689348
2 8.5 0.16111446
3 9 0.1847264

CALCULATIONS:
Distance between the fiber and the detector, z = 4 mm
Radius of the spot, r = 0.06807156457 mm
Numerical Aperture of the optic fiber = 0.4472135955mm
Acceptance angle = 26.5650511𝛩

SOURCES OF ERROR:

1. Placement of components used.

2. Sensitivity of detecting component.
3. Power of emmitter.
4. Optical fiber broken or having cutted.
5. Concentrator malfunctioning.
6. Lose fiber stand

SCREEN SHOTS:
GRAPH:

Result(s):
Numerical aperture of the given Optical fiber = 0.4472135955mm

Conclusion:
-A high numerical aperture allows light to propagate down the fiber in rays both close to
the axis and at various angles, allowing efficient coupling of light into the fiber. However, a high
numerical aperture increases the amount of dispersion as rays at different angles have different
path lengths and therefore take different times to traverse the fiber. A low numerical aperture may
therefore be desirable.
