20ME4T05 – MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGY

Course Objectives:
To understand the fundamentals of metals casting, metal joining (welding), metal forming methods, metal
cutting methods, lathes, Milling, Drilling & Boring, and metal Finishing and Super Fine Finishing
Processes
Course Outcomes:
At the end of this course, the learner will be able to
CO1: Illustrate metal casting process.
CO2: Interpret metal joining processes.
CO3: Explain the various metal forming, metal cutting methods and machines such as lathes
CO4: Discuss the basic concepts milling, drilling and boring.
CO5:Discuss the basic concepts of finishing and super fine finishing processes.

UNIT – I: Metal Casting


CASTING: Review on Basic Sand Casting process, Patten making; moulding, Core, Gating ratio, Design
of gating Systems.
Principle, process details, advantages and limitation & applications of Expendable mold casting: Shell
molding, Investment casting, Plaster mold casting. Principle, process details, advantages and limitation &
applications Permanent of Mold Casting processes: Pressures die casting, Squeeze casting, Centrifugal
casting, Continuous casting. Casting Defects- remedial measures
Furnaces: Methods of melting metal, melting practice, classification of furnaces, cupola furnace-
construction, zones, and reactions in each zone
UNIT – II: Metal Joining (Welding)
Welding: Classification of welding processes, types of welded joints and their characteristics, Gas
welding, Different types of flames and uses, Oxy – Acetylene Gas, cutting. Basic principles of Arc
welding, Manual metal arc welding, submerged arc welding, and Inert Gas welding- TIG & MIG
welding. Heat affected zones in welding;, Weldability of metals, welding defects –causes and remedial
measures
UNIT – III: Metal Forming
Classification of Plastic deformation in metals and alloys: Classification based on temperature -Hot
working and Cold working and applied stresses.
Forging: Principle, classification of forging operations equipment, process details, advantages and
limitation applications of forged products, defects and remedial measures.
Rolling – Principle, classification of rolling equipment, process details, advantages and limitation
applications of forged rolled products, defects and remedial measures. Forces in rolling and power
requirements.
Extrusion: Principle, process details, classification of advantages and limitation applications of extruded
products defects and remedial measures and extrusion equipment. Impact extrusion, Hydrostatic
extrusion;
Wire drawing and Tube drawing: Principle, process details, classification of advantages and limitation
applications of drawn products
Sheet metal forming - Blanking and piercing, Forces and power requirement in these operations, Deep
drawing, Stretch forming, Bending, Spring back and its remedies, Coining,Spinning, Types of presses and
press tools.

UNIT – IV Fundamentals of Metal Cutting: Orthogonal and oblique cutting, mechanism of chip
formation, types of chips, Merchant’s force diagram, cutting forces, cutting speeds, feed, depth of cut,
tool life, tool wear, machinability, tool materials and properties.

LATHE MACHINES:
Engine lathe – principle of working, specification of lathe – types of lathe – work holders tool holders –
box tools taper turning, thread turning – for lathes and attachments, constructional features of speed gear
box and feed gear box. Turret and capstan lathes – collet chucks – other work holders – tool holding
devices – box and tool layout. Principal features of automatic lathes – classification – single spindle and
multi-spindle automatic lathes.
UNIT – V Milling, Drilling & Boring, Finishing and Super Fine Finishing Processes
MILLING MACHINES: Principles of working – specifications – classification of Milling Machines –
principal features of horizontal, vertical and universal Milling Machine, machining operations, types of
cutters, geometry of milling cutters – methods of indexing, accessories to milling machines. .
DRILLING & BORING MACHINES: Principles of working, specifications, types, operations
performed – tool holding devices – twist drill – Boring Machines – fine Boring Machines – jig boring
machine, deep hole Drilling Machine.
Grinding, Super finishing
FINISHING PROCESSES: Theory of grinding – classification of grinding machines, cylindrical and
surface grinding machines, tool and cutter grinding machines, different types of abrasives, bonds,
specification and selection of a grinding wheel. Lapping, Honing & Broaching operations, comparison to
grinding
