D.Answer the following questions.


1. We need cook food because cooking makes food
soft, tasty and easy to digest. It also kills germs in
the food.
2. Three ways in which food can be cooked are:
• Boiling : In this method, food is cooked by
keeping water in it which is then heated till it
is boiling hot. Rice, vegetables and eggs are
cooked in this manner.
• Steaming : This is a method in which food is
kept in a utensils with holes, over a pot of
boiling water. The steam from the boiling
water rises up through the holes and slowly
cooks the food. The utensils is kept covered
so that the steam is trapped inside. Idlis,
dhoklas and momos are cooked in this
manner.
• Baking: This method involves cooking food in
dry heat inside an oven. Cakes , pastries,
tarts, bread, buns, biscuit and cookies are
baked inside an oven.

3. The different materials used to make utensils are


wood, stone, clay (earthenware), metals like
steel, iron, aluminum and copper, some special
plastics, glass and chinaware (a type of clay).
4. The materials that are burned to produce heat or
energy while cooking are known as fuel. Some
fuel commonly used by people to cook food are
firewood, coal and charcoal, electricity and solar
energy.

5. Babies and elderly people need to eat soft food


as it is easier to chew and digest.

Additional exercise:
1. What are non-stick utensils ?
Ans. Non-stick utensils are utensils with a
special coating in which food can be cooked
with very little or no oil.

2. Why is cooking food in a pressure cooker


considered a better method of cooking than
boiling the food?
Ans. Cooking food in a pressure cooker is
considered a better method of cooking than
boiling because it helps us in preserving the
nutrients present I the food. These nutrients
might get lost if we simply boil the food.
Activity of chapter-10 (our food)

1. Make a creative chat on Importance of


Food. (You can use paper plate or chat
paper and make it more creative).
2. Make a Christmas food card of your choice.

Activity of chapter-11 (cooking)

BUTTER MILK- Take half a glass of curd-
pour a glass of water into it -sprinkle salt
and masala onto it-mix everything well-
butter milk is ready.
