ROQUE Lesson-Plan

This document contains a lesson plan for a 7th grade mathematics class. The lesson plan aims to teach students about the interior and exterior angles of polygons. Specifically, students will learn to derive the relationship between interior and exterior angles of convex polygons and find the sum of interior and exterior angles. The lesson contains examples and activities to help students understand these concepts, such as matching polygons to their number of sides, drawing diagonals to find the number of triangles in different polygons, and calculating the sum and measure of interior angles. The lesson plan also establishes that the sum of exterior angles of any polygon is always 360 degrees.

What you have noticed in this activity?

(It’s Indicates of how many sides the shape has)

Very Good, because the activity you’ve answered indicates how many
sides the shape has. Also, we can apply this in our new discussion
because we must know each side of the polygons.

Did you understand?

C. Establishing a Today, we will discuss about angles of polygon which is the interior and exterior
purpose for the angle of a polygon.
lesson
In this lesson, you will learn to:
a. derive inductively the relationship of exterior and interior angles of a convex
polygon.
b. find the sum of interior and exterior angles.

So what do we mean by the interior and exterior angles?

When we say Interior angles
 Interior angles of a polygon are angles formed by the consecutive sides of
a polygon.
For example is this

∠1, ∠ 2, ∠ 3, ∠4 , and ∠5

When we say interior, we can see that inside of the polygon.

So, all the angles we can see inside of the polygon are called interior angles.

Next how about the Exterior angles

 Exterior angles of a polygon are the angles formed when the side of a
polygon is extended.
For example

In the given illustration our angles are ∠ 6, ∠ 7, ∠ 8, ∠ 9, ∠ 10

Remember: The interior and exterior angles of a polygon form a linear pair, so
they are supplementary.
When we say linear pair, those are the two angles that are in line with each
other, and automatic when they are in a linear pair, they are supplementary.
When we say supplementary is always 180°

Take a look at this

I have 3 figures here and it is quadrilateral, pentagon and hexagon. The sum of
the interior angles of a triangle is 180.

Let’s draw diagonals from one vertex only and find how many triangles can be
formed.

In figure 1, how many triangles can be formed in quadrilateral?

(2 triangles)

Very Good.

In figure 2, how many triangles can be formed in pentagon?

(3 triangles)

Very Good.

Last, How many triangles can be formed in hexagon?

(4 triangles)

Very Good.

Did you understand?

Now, If the sum of the interior angles of a triangle is 180, what do you think is the
sum of interior of a:
1. Quadrilateral? 360 because 2 x 180 = 360
2. Pentagon? 540 because 3 x 180 = 540
3. Hexagon? 720 because 4 x 180 = 720

Did you understand?

D. Presenting Let’s take a look at another example of sum of interior angles of a polygon.
examples /
instances of the
new lesson

Remember:
The sum of the interior angles of a convex polygon with n sides is (n-2)180.
Where n = no. of sides.

Another example
1. Find the sum of interior angles of octagon
Answer:
Octagon = 8 sides
Sum of the interior angles = (n-2)180
= (8-2)180
= (6) 180
=1080

2. Find the sum of the interior angles of nonagon.

Answer:
Nonagon = 9 sides
Sum of interior angles= (n- 2) 180
= ( 9 –2) 180
= (7) 180
= 1260

Any questions of sum of interior angles?

Okay, what about the measure of the missing interior angle?

For example
Find the measure of missing interior angle of a polygon.
Solution:
41 ° + 58° = 99°
180° – 99° = 81°
Answer: 81°

Solution:
65 ° + 110° + 87° = 262°
360° – 262° = 98°
Answer: 98°

Solution:
100 ° + 112° + 113° +117° = 442°
540° – 442° = 98°
Answer: 98°

Did you understand?

So let’s proceed in measure of each interior angle of a regular polygon

When we say interior angles regular polygon, remember: All the interior angles of
a regular polygon are equal.

For example:
Find the measure of each interior angle of regular polygon.

( n−2 ) 180
Formula:
n
( 3−2 ) 180
=
3
( 1 ) 180
=
3
180
= 3 or 60°

Answer: 60°
Since the sum of interior angles of a triangle is 180° , divide by 3 so each angle
measures 60°

( n−2 ) 180
Formula:
n
( 5−2 ) 180
=
5
( 3 ) 180
=
5
540
= 5 or 108°

Answer: 108°
Did you understand?
E. Discussing new Okay, If we have the sum of interior angles. Also we have the sum of exterior
concepts and angles of a polygon.
practicing new
skills #1 What about the sum of exterior angles of a polygon.
 The sum of exterior angles of any polygon is 360.
But why 360 degrees? Let us observe the following polygons and make the
conjecture about the sum of the measures of exterior angles of a polygon which
is 360 degrees.

What can you notice?

Okay, if we combine all of the exterior angles by rotating or by the amount of

terms in order to get to the next side of the polygon and if we keep turning we’ll
get back to where started from. We got 360.

Therefore, all exterior angles, regular or not is always 360.

For example:
Find the measure of exterior angles.
Note: The interior and exterior angles of a polygon form a linear pair, so they are
supplementary.
Step 1: Find the measure of ∠X
180° – (41° + 58° ) =81°
Step 2: Find the measure of ∠1
180° - 41° = 139°
Step 3: Find the measure of ∠2
180° - 81° = 99°
Step 4: Find the measure of ∠3
180° - 58° = 122°
Step 5: Check your answers by adding all the exterior angles, the sum must be
360°
139° + 99°+122° = 360°

Note: The interior and exterior angles of a polygon form a linear pair, so they are
supplementary.

Step 1: Find the measure of ∠1∧∠2

∠ 1 = 90° & ∠ 2 = 90°
Step 2: Find the measure of ∠ A
180° - 34° = 146°
Step 3: Find the measure of ∠ B
180° - 146° = 34°
Step 4: Find the measure of ∠C
180° - 90° = 90°
Step 5: Find the measure of ∠ D
180° - 90° = 90°
Step 6: Check your answers by adding all the exterior angles, the sum must be
360°
146° + 34° +90 °+90 °= 360°

Did you understand?

Very Good.

So let’s proceed. If we have interior angles of regular polygon, Also we have

Exterior angles of a regular polygon.
360°
To find the exterior angle of each of a regular polygon use this formula: n

Did you understand now how to solve the interior and exterior angle?

Very Good.

living BASEBALL In baseball, home plate is a pentagon. The dimensions of home
plate are shown. What is the sum of the measures of the interior angles of
home plate?

What is our formula of sum of the measures of the interior angles?

(n -2)180

How many sides of Pentagon?

(5 sides)

Now, we need to find the sum of the measures of the interior angles of
home plate.

Since we already have a given and formula, can we solve now?

Solution:
Substitute n = 5
(n-2)180
(5-2)180
3(180)
=540

Therefore, the measure of the interior angles of home plate is 540.

Any questions?

How can polygons be used in real life?

Well polygons are all around us! Most of the common shapes that you see
or study everyday are polygons. You see a wall in front of you or in your
house? That’s a rectangular in shape, it’s a polygon.

Did you get?

Very Good.
