MTH 102

1. The document outlines an elementary algebra and set theory course covering topics like sets, relations and functions, real numbers, inequalities, polynomials, graphs of polynomials, linear equations, matrices, sequences, series, binomial theorem, and partial fractions. 2. It defines what constitutes a well-defined set by giving examples of undefined versus defined sets based on clear properties. 3. Standard notations for various types of sets are provided such as N for natural numbers, Z for integers, Q for rational numbers, and R for real numbers.

SET THEORY C: the set of complex numbers
Other frequently used symbols are:
Set relation and function: ∈: belongs to
A set is a collection of well define ∄ : does not belong to
object or items. For a collection to be a set, it is Y: these exist
necessary that it should be well define. Ұ: these does not exist
Function a special type of relation, each
function is a relation but each relation is not a
function. In this, we shall discourse some basic
definitions and operation involving sets,
certation’s products of sets, relation between
two sets, the conditions under when a relation
becomes a function, different types of function
and their properties.
Some standard notation:
Undefined set Well defined set
1. collection of tall students 1. collection of tall students in
in your school. your school whose height is
more than.
2. collection of honest 2. collection of those people in
persons in your colony. your colony who have never
been found involve in any theft
case.
3. collection of interesting 3. collection of mathematics
books in your school library. books in your school library.

4. collection of intelligence 4. Collection of those students

students in your school. in your school who have
secured more than 80% mark
in annual examination.
In all collections written on the left-hand
side of the vertical line determine tallness,
interesting, honesty, intelligence are not well
define. In fact, those notions vary from
individual to individual, hence those calculation
cannot be considered as set.
While in all collection written on the
right-hand side of the vertical line, ‘height more
than 180cm’, ‘mathematics books’, ‘never been
found involve in theft case’, ‘marks more than
80%’, are well define properties. Therefore, this
collection can be considered as sets.
If a collection is a set, then each object
of this collection is seat to be an element of the
set. A set is usually denoted by capital letters on
English alphabet and its element are denoted by
small letters.
Example:
A {a, e, i, o, u}
Some standard notation to represent set:
N: the set of natural numbers
W: the set of whole numbers
Z or I: the set of integers
Z+: the of positive integers
Z-: the set of negative integers
Q: the set of rational numbers
R: the set of real numbers
