Statement of Purpose Which Got Me Into Purdue!
into Purdue!
Hey guys, so this might be the most important blog you would read. Also, I am going to include
all my personal experiences which I went through during the application process. Statement of
purpose a.k.a SOP a.k.a application essay is one of the most important things in your application.
It is like beans to rajma chawal or petrol to your car. Without this, your application will be just
another rejected application lying in the pile. I have included a download link at the end of this
doc, if you want to share you can share the pdf as well. You can watch the video if you’d not like
to read the document down below.
If you do not know what SOP is let me explain. (for everyone else you can skip to next
paragraph). Statement of Purpose is the essay you have to write which states that why you want
to study at a particular university. To explain it in simple words, it like a one-time chat option to
a person who you want to date in future. You will have to present yourself super great and put the
real you out on paper. You will have to explain everything to them in one essay so that they say
yes, this student, I want this student to study at our university.
I will try to explain everything as succinct as possible. Also, I will try to mention everything in
points, so that it is easier to read. Okay, all of the universities require SOP and also all of them
have different guidelines on how they want their essay. For example, as far as I remember while I
was applying to TU Delft, there was clear format of how you should write the essay
1. A clear and relevant essay in English (2,000 – 3,000 words) addressing the
following:
2. Your motivation for taking the MSc programme of your choice.
3. Why you wish to pursue this programme abroad and/or in the Netherlands in
particular.
4. Why you are interested in TU Delft.
5. If there are optional specialisations in the Master’s programme of your choice:
which specialisation(s) interest you most, and why?
6. Examples of three Master’s thesis topics that interest you and with an explanation
of your particular interest.
7. A brief summary (maximum 250 words) of the thesis work or the final assignment
done for your Bachelor’s programme, including information on the credits
earned, grades, and full workload.
Below is the format, but the format is common and ideas are not. You have to sell yourself. You
will get this kind format everywhere but I am going to tell you the key points to remember while
writing it.
First Paragraph– Your introduction, and your industry introduction and letting
them know that you want to pursue a graduate major.
Second Paragraph – Introduction to undergrad and how it improved your skills
and mentioning your academics and your background which made you pursue this
major.
Third Paragraph – Your academic projects
Fourth paragraph – Internships
Fifth Paragraph – Any other research works and achievements or extra-curricular
Sixth Paragraph – Final note mentioning how their graduate program helps you
and professors whom you want to work under and how their research interests
incline with yours and thank them for considering your application.
Let’s keep the above points as it is. And go through on how to start writing SOP one by one and
then we’ll take the above point again.
