MODEL QUESTION PAPER

Subject: Strength of Materials -I - (A0102) Branch: Civil Engineering

Answer all questions 5X14M=70 M

Q NO
QUESTIONS M BT CO
a.) Derive the relationship between Young’s modulus E and the bulk modulus K.

b.) A compound bar is made up of a central steel plate 60 mm wide and 10 mm

thick, to which copper plates 40 mm wide by 5 mm thick are connected
4 L4 1
rigidly on each side. The length of the bar at normal temperature is 1 m. If the
1
temperature is raised by 80 ◦C, determine the stresses in each metal and the 10 L5 1
change in length. Assume Young’s modulus for steel and copper to be 200
GPa and 100 GPa, respectively, and the respective thermal expansion
coefficients are 12 × 10−6/ ◦C and 18.5 × 10−6/◦C.

OR
A T-beam floor consists of 150 mm thick R.C slab monolithic with 300 mm
wide beams. The beams are spaced at 3.5 m centre to centre and their effective
2 14 L5 1
span is 6 m. If the super imposed load on the slab is 5 KN/m 2. Design an
intermediate T-beam. Use M 20 grade of concrete and Fe 415 grade steel.
Draw a schematic of each of the following types of beams and classify as either,
3 statically de- terminate or indeterminate: Cantilever beam, simply supported 14 L4 2
beam, propped cantilever, continuous beam, fixed beam.
OR
An 8 m long beam AB has simple supports, one at the left-end A, and another at
6 m from A. At the right-end B, a 15 kN is acting downward. Also, a uniformly
4 14 L5 2
distributed load of 80/3 kN/m is acting for a length of 3m from A. Draw the
SFD and BMD for this beam. Locate the point of contraflexure, if any.
State the assumptions for the Simple Bending Theory and show that the neutral
5 axis of a beam passes through the centre of gravity (CG) of the beam cross- 14 L4 3
section.
OR
A 100 mm (width) × 200 mm (depth) cross-sectional beam is subjected to a
bending moment of 750 kNm. Determine the maximum normal stress in the
6 14 L5 3
beam and the value of normal stress at a distance of 65 mm from the top surface
of the beam.
Find the deflection and slope for the entire span L of a cantilever beam with a
7 14 L4 4
point load W at the free-end. Assume that EI is the beam’s flexural rigidity.
OR
Find the slope and deflection of a simply-supported beam of length L, flexural
8 rigidity EI, and with a point-load W at a distance a from the left support. Use 14 L4 4
Macaulay’s method.
9 An element has a tensile stress of 600 MN/m2 and a compressive stress of 400 14 L5 5
MN/m2 acting on two mutually perpendicular planes. It has two equal shear
stresses of 200 MN/m2 on these planes. Determine (i) the magnitude and
direction of the principal stresses, (ii) the magnitude and direction of the
maximum of shear stresses.
OR
a.) Name the failure theories that are used for (i) Brittle materials, and (ii)
Ductile materials. 4 L4 5
10 b.) Draw the Mohr’s circle and indicate the locations of the principal stresses,
and maximum shear stresses. From the Mohr’s circle find the relative angles 10 L5 5
between the various planes you located.
